Above All Sports is a great program that will definitely be a must-see tournament every time they put an event on in Houston. Thank you to Above All for allowing me to come out and cover the tournament as the games were fun to watch and I will be attending more of these in the near future!
DJ Matthews
DJ Matthews
DJ was on fire all weekend for BP Elite as he absolutely decimated the competition. Matthews showed his ability as a score-first guard, but he still was able to play highly unselfish when it mattered most. DJ was great at setting up teammates in the right places on the court to score the basketball. Using quick moves to beat his defenders to the basket, he was able to slide past his matchup to the rim and put in the easy layup/floater for a quick two points. Matthews has been torching defenses all summer and only continues to improve with every game he plays in. One of his more impressive games I was able to watch was on Saturday against Beast Elite, where he was pretty much able to score the rock any way he wanted and locked up on defense.
Ben Sherman
Ben Sherman
Sherman came in to the 8:00 game Saturday and kicked off the tournament with a bang. To add to this fact, he came off the bench and did as much if not more damage than the starters on his team. Ben was able to score in a variety of ways and was a very vocal participant on the defensive end. Sherman notched close to 5 steals this game and added a couple of beyond the arc three pointers that helped clutch the game for his squad. The Rockstarz are a well coached team who will only continue to improve as the season goes on and from what I’ve seen, Ben has not hit his ceiling yet and there is still room for him to improve. I have a feeling this game will be one of many in which he will be able to showcase what he can do on the court against above average competition.
Cameron Johnson
Cameron Johnson
Cameron was an absolute monster on both ends of the court in Houston Flight’s come from behind win over BP Elite 9th grade. Johnson was a willing facilitator in every aspect of the game, always hitting his teammates in the right shooting pocket for them to get a wide open look at the basket. Cam led the charge on offense, scoring the ball from all levels of the floor and being relied upon as a heavy number one option. Despite his size, Johnson was not scared of anyone on the court and clearly showed in his ability to lock up his matchup on defense, notching several steals and forcing turnovers left and right. Cam will continue to improve throughout the summer
Maden Lawrence
Maden Lawrence
Maden was a big time playmaker for his team in the games on Saturday afternoon. He definitely made a huge difference with his playmaking and facilitating ability when he ran the offense, being a willing passer and never being afraid to swing the ball one more time. Lawrence’s ability to be unselfish was what made him stand out to me, but don’t be deceived, as he can get a bucket whenever he needs to. He beat the defense to the basket off the dribble several times as well as hitting jumpers from the mid range and also beyond the arc. Maden is an athlete who will continue to stand out to coaches as his unselfish nature makes him a very valuable commodity to any team he plays on. Look for A-Game Athletes to make some noise this summer on the circuit.
