Continue ReadingIt was a brief opening session at the West Coast Clash, but the kids still showed up and showed out Friday night. I got to watch a handful of games and pick out some of the top performers from the 16U and 15U divisions. Let’s get it started with some of the nights best.
15U Standouts
Juma Whatley
Juma Whatley
Whatley was a big factor helping his squad gain and maintain momentum early in the game. He was knocking down the long-range shots with ease and took advantage of every hand left down. He also mixed it up inside and contributed on the glass with his size and aggression.
Artharee was a smooth player with the ball, splitting defenders and and getting into the heart of the defense. He was one of his team’s more effective playmakers and showed a diverse range of finishes at the hoop, over the top of defenders and through contact.
This guy is one of the top defenders on his team and can really lock down ballhandlers and push them out away from the arc. He got hot on the offensive end in this one, nailing a couple of 3-pointers and playing well off of two feet, getting into the middle of the defense and hitting the short-range shots.
He battled through foul trouble early on in a closely called game but was able to adjust and help spur a big run in the second half to push the game out of reach. He is a versatile player that gets the defensive board and looks to push immediately, able to go coast to coast at any moment.
Highlights
Jacob Diaz
Jacob Diaz
Diaz was impressive for Team Progress in a tight matchup against Roots Academy. He was a high usage player, creating off the dribble and shifting the defense to create looks for teammates as well. He’s a nice finisher through contact, got to the line and knocked down the freebies, and made some really crafty finishes to balance out his strength at the rim.
Keegan Bell
Keegan Bell
The Roots forward is a long kid who brings a varying skill set to the table. He was mixing it up on the glass and working to get second chance looks but also has the tact to handle the ball a bit and get his own shot. He showed a solid stroke from the line and has the look of a solid two-way contributer.
Brody Cronk
Brody Cronk
Brody was a solid all-around player who played with good pace, stayed in control and was able to make and execute the right reads at a high rate. He was huge in keeping the offense on track with heady passes, dribble penetration, and some timely shot-making.
16U Standouts
Seward was just on another level physically in his matchup against Catch Spokane. He’s a big, burly kid who can explode to the rim and made some big plays following shots and taking the ball strong back up to the rim. He recognized the mismatch he had inside and went to work, posting a big game for his side.
Highlights
Josh Tichenor
Josh Tichenor
Tichenor played with some zeal and seemed to be one step ahead of the opposition for most of the game. He had nicely timed leak outs for buckets in transition, manipulated defenders well with his dribble to open up driving and passing lanes, and exhibited great vision from all spots in the half court.
Tristan DeVille
Tristan DeVille
This guy was a big factor in the paint and making their transition game go. He was able to fill any role on the break, finishing or handling the ball. He showed pretty good vision as a passer in tight spots in the paint too, and was a beast on the glass while working his way to the foul line for extra opportunities on offense.
