I got to see a ton of talent in the 17u divisoin from prospects ranging from 2023s to even 2027s. Below is part 2 of players that stood out in Saturdays action.
Have been a fan of Shields game since I watched him last summer on a loaded OZ Elite team. This summer playing with PGU has been no different. He still has a great knack for breaking off his defenders and getting to the rim. Did a real solid job of getting to two feet in the lane giving him more options when it came to finishing at the cup. His ability to create with his handle is one of his best assets. Quick and violent first move and can get slithery in traffic to finish around defense.
Highlights
Barron Duda
Barron Duda
If you have watched Duda play you know he can knock it down from deep. He’s a very confident shooter and has every reason to be. This past weekend he displayed his ability to get to the rim well though. Shots weren’t falling as much as they have in the past but that did not slow him down from getting buckets. With his 6’3 frame and built upper half, he can finish at a high clip at the rim after created contact. He handles pressure well as a ball handler and is going to find a way to get his buckets.
Garners ability to get to his spots off the bounce was very impressive. He’s a big fan of the pull up mid range and was able to convert on that specific shot plenty of times. He elevates well, has good footwork, and the speed stop is under control putting him in the best position to convert on the shot. He runs the floor in transition well and can finish some tough finishes on the break with defenders attempting to cut him off.
Franklin was an intriguing prospect after just watching him warm up. 6’7 left handed forward with mobility, bounce, and length. He’s got good footwork inside and can play on the block or out of the mid post. Comfortable with catching on the perimeter and putting the ball on the floor, looks to attack and uses length to give him the upper hand on defenders. Rebounds well on both ends and finishes consistently with both right and left down low.
Jacob was a very efficient and consistent slasher this weekend in Wichita. The 6’2 guard did a solid job of beating defenders on the bounce and displaying some tough finishes at the rim. He finishes well with either hand and can convert on some high level layups. He has some added touch or finesse on his finishes basing off different driving scenarios. He’s a capable shooter with a jumper that may catch you off guard if you give him a step due to his slashing ability.
