Sunday had a lot of key matchups going down in Raleigh, so there were lots of standouts for me to take in. Check out the first part in today’s notebook below.
BSA Supreme is having a terrific start to the AAU season and so much of it has to do with Carson Daniel Carson Daniel 6’1″ | PG Central Cabarrus | 2024 State NC . While he doesn’t put up lots of points (in fact he scored 0 in their win over Team Wall ), he impacts the game in so many other ways. He makes all the right plays as a passer and point guard and is not afraid to give it up to his teammates who will score. He’s also always in the passing lanes as a defender, poking the ball away for runouts leading to easy points. I also was able to hear him talking and directing his squad from multiple rows back in a loud gym, which only impresses me even further. Catawba has gotten a steal with the Daniel twins, and Carson showed me why this weekend.
Gray impressed me today amongst all the talent on his NC Spartans squad due to his confidence and effort he was exhibiting all game long. He was not afraid to drive the basketball at bigger defenders and take contact, while making tough shots. He brought the ball up against consistent pressure and handled it with poise too, which I felt like was the word of the day to describe him. His lack of protoypical point guard size is offset by his physical body type and ability to take contact. He should be a name to monitor over the course of the summer.
Swindell is a big-bodied guard that sometimes plays like a forward that did well for his NC Rise squad. He’s incredibly physical and hard to stop when he gets a head of steam. When his teammates are putting up shot his first thought is to head to the offensive glass to clean up any misses and help start the team’s pressure from the other end of the court. I thought his slashing skills were that of someone who could be a complimentary piece on an NAIA/JuCo squad, with more upside if he can show he shoots the ball really well.
Melton was really impressive to me as his Garner Road 2025’s interior presence this morning. He’s super active around the rim and on the perimeter altering shots, he’s got long arms and is quick enough to catch up to people. In transition he runs the floor very hard in order to be down low and finish rim runs and layups. He extended his range out to 15 feet when I watched him, knocking down a free throw line jumper off an interior drive. He doesn’t have a lot in the way of post moves, but his physicality is enough for him to stay on the court as a scorer alone. If he keeps growing he will be a premier player in his class.
Campbell is the ultimate D3 package on his Spartans squad, showcasing impressive athleticism along with quality intangibles. He’s got a super high motor, jumping and leaping above the rim to tip in shots or dunk the ball, and runs the floor incredibly well. He’s scrappier than many of his peers, hitting the floor multiple times for loose balls and playing through the whistle in order to stay physical. His team was down at half and through the second half, his composure and demeanor never wavered as his squad clawed back into it. He’s a big wing that should be able to stay on the floor on defense. and make winning plays in order to help his team.
