This time of year means a significant uptick in recruiting news now that the college season has concluded and coaching staffs are working diligently to reload their programs for years to come with talented prospects. One prospect in particular who has seen his stock rise since the opening weekend of the grassroots season (non-live) is 2025 Gonzaga/ DC Premier guard William Harper William Harper 6'4" | PG Gonzaga | 2025 State MD .
The 6-foot-3 guard received two offers over the last week from George Mason and American. Prep Hoops caught up with him to speak on how the offers came to be.
“My coaches at Premier told me about American extending their offer. Head coach Duane Simpkins saw me on film throughout our event last weekend in Richmond and I feel like I played pretty good down there.”
“George Mason attended one of our open runs at school recently where I also played pretty well and the new assistant coach, Louis Hinnant, told Coach Turner that they were officially offering me. I was really grateful for the offers. Programs have been looking at me for a little bit now, so to officially turn into offers just has me excited for getting on campuses and learning more about the schools.
The Purple Eagles have an extremely intriguing and talented young core of players. Harper is one of those who continues to expand his game by adjusting to his role that head coach Steve Turner had in place for him last year.
“I think I’ve gotten a lot better defensively and playing off the ball because in AAU in ninth grade I was more ball dominant and playing the point guard role. But this year, I was more of a defensive two-way player and I had to knock down open shots. I think I improved as a shooter off the catch and just defending a lot better.
Harper will play on the UAA Circuit this spring/summer with a DC Premier 16U squad that has enough talent to make a legitimate run at the championship come July. The team goals remain at the forefront of his mind, but this time of year is also crucial for further developing his game with expectations of taking on a bigger role at Gonzaga next season as a junior.
“Obviously my main goal is to win a championship this summer, but as an individual I want to keep getting my teammates involved. I also want to get better at creating my own shot and I think that guarding and playing really good defense is going to be a way that I can set the tone for my team. I’d also like to make the the Under Armour Top 60 and really show everything that I can do out there on the circuit.
As the spring progresses and if DC Premier can get off to a hot start, it’s safe to assume that more college programs will take note of Harper’s ability and upside.
“I’m very versatile,” Harper said when asked to describe his game. “I’m a longer point guard and I can also play off the ball and shoot. I can also defend, so I’d just describe my game as versatile overall.”
