Batemon had the game-high 33 points, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well he defended the stars of St. Thomas More despite giving up several inches. A plus-length 6-foot-3 guard, Batemon just wasn’t willing to give up ground and stopped countless straight-line drives while also not letting those guys back him down in the post. Batemon got the Novas back in front in the second half. When danger time hit, Batemon responded with a sereis of triples. St. Thomas More played zone for the majority of the game. Batemon, one of the deadliest shooters in the state with unlimited range, was just licking his chops. Zones are completely ineffective against Batemon, who can stretch them well beyond the 3-point arc. At the very least, that’s going to force the perimeter defenders to extend and leave a gaping hole in the soft spot of the middle. It’s a deep sophomore class, but among the top-tier talent, I’m not sure anyone has helped themselves as much as Batemon.

Brown was very effective against the St. Thomas More zone. The 6-foot-8 sophomore caught in the high post and was able to slash, finishing with either hand and against contact. Brown finished with 25 points, including a key and-one in overtime that quickly helped MAS erase a two-point deficit. On the next trip down, Brown delivered a beautiful no-look assist for a slam which completely swung the momentum in favor of the Novas for the rest of the extra period. A strong, athletic forward who’s been steadily improving his skills, Brown has the capability of getting coast to coast with the basketball and can shoot it from outside the paint a bit. An intimidating shot blocker, Brown protects the paint as well as any young prospect in the state. If he continues to work, Brown certainly has the makings of a two-way impact player capable of dominating a game for 36 minutes.

Konneh had a monster second half and carried the load when McCottry hit the bench with his third foul. His junkyard dog brand of basketball was extremely effective. Konneh believed every offensive rebound was his and often just willed St. Thomas More with his unrelenting aggression. Still one of the most intriguing prospects in the 2024 class, Konneh is nowhere near his ceiling. The 6-foot-7 combo forward has a sweet mid-range game, but is still working to expand his game beyond the paint. At his size and athletic ability, Konneh can guard almost 1-through-5 depending on the team. He’s a super long explosive athlete that can change games on either end of the floor. In Saturday’s loss, Konneh scored a team-high 27 points and racked up 22 rebounds along with three assists.

Although he sat for a huge chunk of the second half due to foul trouble, McCottry still finished with 25 points. After STM faced a hole in the first half, McCottry scored seven consecutive points in a flurry to bring his team back. McCottry was 9-of-19 from the field and also grabbed five rebounds before fouling out in overtime. A bigger wing that plays an aggressive, downhill style, McCottry is very tough to keep away from the rim. At 6-foot-6, he’s skilled on the ball and plays with a noticeable power and intensity that’s tough for most defenders to match. McCottry has gotten noticeably better as a drive and dish passer as well, less willing to take on multiple defenders and make the right play with the basketball. If McCottry knocks down his mid-range and 3-point jump shots the way he was on Saturday, you just have to live with it as a defender and tip your hat, because that’s the lesser of two evils when compared to his explosive slashing ability.

Even though Pewaukee struggled for a better part of the first half, Momcilovic did not. Thought the Iowa State commit did a terrific job of helping his team hang around after Wisconsin Lutheran jumped out to an eight-point lead. Momcilovic also gave the Pirates momentum going into the locker room with a last second bucket before the buzzer. When all was said and done, Momcilovic scored a game-high 25 points. The 6-foot-8 forward did his damage in a variety of ways, scoring inside and out and often scoring early in possessions. Momcilovic also grabbed 15 rebounds, dished out two assists, and blocked two shots in the win.
Kaeden Osterman Kaeden Osterman 6'2" | SG Pewaukee | 2023 WI – 2023 – SG – Pewaukee
Trailing by two at the half, Pewaukee came roaring out of the gates in the second half led by two 3-pointers from Osterman. There’s a reason when Momcilovic catches in the post, he’s always looking over his shoulder to see where Osterman is, because the senior guard is an automatic 3-point shooter. Osterman also hit two triples in the first half to bring the Pirates back from an 8-point deficit. The Pirates always seem to have x-factors which takes them from being a very good team to a great team. Osterman is no exception to that. In addition to his 3-point shooting, Osterman is a tenacious defender with the right attitude and want-to on that end of the floor. Might not be the flashiest prospect, but think he can definitely help a college program. Even if he never sees the floor, Osterman is one of those guys who will make teams better in practice and someone who will challenge the stars every single day behind the scenes.

Felt like Wisconsin Lutheran forgot about him in the second half, but Young had one of his better games despite the loss. Young came out early and scored eight points in the first half. The senior guard gave the Pirates all sorts of problems in the opening 15 minutes with his ability to get two feet in the paint and score off a jump stop. The 6-foot-4 combo guard used his size really well to score over some smaller defenders. Young would finish with 12 points (6-11), five rebounds, and two assists in the loss.
