Continue ReadingThis season Wilton high school had quiet the successful year put together by a big group of players that has stuck together ever since they were much younger. This helped the Beavers dominate their side of their conference the past two seasons in the 2A class. One of the big pieces for the group over the past few years is Landyn Putman Landyn Putman 6’3″ | SG Wilton | 2024 State IA . Putman, a shooting guard, has nice size at 6’3/6’4 with a long wing-span on the floor. He is primarily a three point shooter but has worked to become more versatile over the past year or so. During the high school year he averaged just under 15 PPG on 47% shooting, including 37% from behind the three point arc. This AAU season he will join a Team Iowa program out of Cedar Rapids before heading into his senior season. Bringing some hard nose defense and consistent scoring to that group. If he puts together a solid AAU season scoring the ball and keeps that momentum going into his last year at Wilton, he is going to be a prospect that a lot of colleges in the area will have some common interest in before things are said and done.
The Barnstormers have put together quite the roster for their upcoming spring/summer sessions that begin in a few short weeks. A roster filled with a group of nice handling guards, balanced shooters, and dominate big guys in the middle of the paint. One of those guys that really can light it up is Trey Hughes Trey Hughes 6’2″ | SG Liberty | 2024 State IA . Hughes is of good size and speed for his position with the ability to catch on fire rather quickly while shooting. He is a three level scorer with a nice pull up off of the dribble going baseline or off of the catch. He is the type of player who only has to see one go through the hoop for it to be a long night for an opposing team. Though he can score, he isn’t selfish. He understands that others can get hot along with him and makes sure that those guys get the ball in those moments. Really a coaches dream when you say it out loud. Other than that he works hard on defense and leaves it all on the floor each game he participates in. As a prospect I like what he brings to the table. He is a player who can fit into a lot of college systems out there. A player who could join a successful program at the next level and make an impact on both ends of the floor for a few years to come.
Eli Menke
Eli Menke
Eli Menke may not look like one of the best shooters in the state but he un-doubtably is. This season he lit it up from deep at a consistent and efficient rate. He ended his season averaging just under 12.5 PPG, and 3 APG while making 3-three pointers per game as a starter. Not to mention his shooting percentage from long range is one of the best in the state throughout all classes at around 42.5%. Showing off to potential recruiters that he makes good choices as to when to shoot the ball and when not to. An important ability to possess when you have the ball in your hands a majority of the time on the perimeter. Other than shooting the rock, Menke is a solid 6’4 in size and can take advantage of mismatches closer to the rim throughout the longevity of a game when given the chance. The Bulldogs ended their season just 1 game short of the state tournament with an overall 23-1 record, including going 16-0 in conference play. They may of not made the Well but a successful season either way in a lot of peoples eyes. I expect Menke to retuhis winter to his Bulldogs team as one of the best shooters in the state of Iowa from deep. Something that he is no stranger of at this point in his career.
The Solon Spartans put together another solid season behind the play of their upperclassmen and the game-planning of their coaching staff. Their leader on the offensive end being Jake Benzing Jake Benzing 6’2″ | SG Solon | 2024 State IA . Benzing was solid night in and night out all season long. He was an efficient scorer on the offensive end of the floor while being a shot-blocker and consistent rebounder on the defensive end. He does a great job getting to the spots he likes on the floor and being prepared for his jump-shot. He usually sets up outside the three point line to start his possessions, giving him the option to attack mid-range for a pull up or to get all the way to the rim over a slower/weaker defender. His shooting ability is definitely what makes him an attractive prospect to college coaches accompanied with his size. He is the type of player who has practiced so much that he makes shooting the ball look effortless, no matter how far he is away from the basket. This AAU season he will join up with his All Iowa Attack East team for one more go around on the AAU platform. He will look to lead a team that is loaded with talent at all positions across the board.
