Here are some guards from the 2025 class making an impression in their sophomore season:
The second-ranked player in the class has led Olathe North on a steady climb this season. From unranked, the Eagles have climbed to #4 in the rankings, which shouldn’t come as a surprise since this group went to state a year ago and returned key pieces. Watson teams with junior TJ Porter TJ Porter 5’7″ | PG Olathe North | 2024 State KS to keep the Eagles running at top speed. They play a small lineup, but every game is a track meet. Watson, who was recently named MVP of the Orange and Black Classic, cracks double figures in nearly every game, while running point, setting up the offense and distributing the ball. He’s not a big player, but he plays big.
Highlights
Shawnee Mission Northwest has been competitive while utilizing a lot of young players, particularly four sophomores and a freshman. The leading scorer and one of the top rebounders is long, physical guard Wagler (pictured). At 6-foot-2 and solid, he can be a handful for small guards. But if he gets matched up with a big man, he can stretch the defense on the perimeter, drive and outrun the opponent up and down the court. The sixth-ranked player in the class is dangerous from deep and can penetrate on the bounce. His size, handle and ability to rebound make him a versatile mismatch.
Highlights
The Titans are led by a couple of sophomores – Mboule and big man Parker Hardgrave Parker Hardgrave 6’7″ | C Wichita South | 2025 State KS . Ranked seventh in the class, Mboule showed as a freshman that he could be a threat, leading Wichita South in scoring. He is averaging 11 points this season while also distributing the ball. With his physical size and ability to anticipate, he is equally tough on the defensive end. He’s handsy and smart and can play physical without fouling.
Highlights
Aquinas supports a couple of veterans with a whole crew of sophomores. As this team gains experience playing a rugged schedule, it could really cause problems come playoff time. Ranked ninth in the class of 2025, Burton is one of the Saints’ primary components. He can do a lot of things with the ball, and he’s a dangerous ball hawk at the defensive end. He’s demonstrating an accurate touch from deep, hitting 43% from behind the arc. His balanced stat line is a huge support to the team leaders: 11 points, 4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 3 steals.
One of the first guards to jump out at Prep Hoops scouts before his freshman season started, Peters has continued to impress. He climbed to tenth on the 2025 list with the most recent update. He is one of the primary reasons Emporia has greatly improved over the past couple of seasons. The Spartans finally have a balanced and diverse lineup and it’s paying off. A big, physical guard who can bully smaller guards, Peters leads the team in scoring with 12 points per game. He occasionally busts out for 20 or more. He’s a tough and strong driver and rebounder.
