The Spartans trailed 16-15 after the first quarter, but turned on the jets in the middle two quarters, eventually pushing their lead out to as many as 20 points before a late Keokuk run got the Chiefs back to within single digits. Solon advances to play Mount Pleasant in the 3A-6 substate semifinals on Thursday night.

Benzing has really improved over the last year, turning himself into a deadly shooter. He had 18 points on 7-15 shooting (4-6 3P), showing a quick, smooth release off the catch as well as the ability to put the ball on the floor and get to his own shots. He moves well without the ball in his hands, finding open spaces in the defense, whether that’s operating out of the high post or finding open slots on the wing or in the corner. He’s always balanced and showed that he can be a playmaker when he touches it in the high post against a zone. He rebounds well, particularly on the defensive end, and has good court vision. An all-around strong showing out of the rapidly improving junior.
Sean Stahle
Sean Stahle
A quick guard who gets into the teeth of the defense via dribble penetration routinely, Stahle flashed good court vision and passing instincts, dishing out 4 assists to go with his 9 points. He’s at his best when he’s playing downhill, and he’s a good finisher through contact around the bucket. Defensively he moves his feet well and keeps his hands active.
Oaken Foster
Oaken Foster
An active defender with great length at the top of the Solon 1-3-1, Foster makes a major impact on the game with his ability to get his hands on passes and into passing lanes. He’s a good playmaker with great court vision who dished out 4 assists, making plays out of the high post and the short corner. He has a good mid-range game and rebounds at a high level on both ends of the floor. A good athlete who stuffs the stat sheet, he finished with 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists.

A quality role player who does what is asked of him, Steinbrech plays really hard on both ends of the floor. He’s an active defender, capable finisher around the rim, and a solid playmaker, who had 4 assists in the Spartans’ win.
Garcia is a lot of fun to watch, sometimes a bull in a china shop, sometimes a ballerina. He’s at his best when he’s playing downhill and getting to the rim, using his quick first step and solid handles to get by defenders. He finishes really well around the bucket, showing good body control and the ability to finish through contact. He sees the floor well and is an assertive offensive weapon. The next step in his development will be adding consistent range to his game.
Blake Chase
Blake Chase
An off-ball guard with a quick release, Chase had a big second half as a shooter, burying three 3-pointers on six attempts. He’s a confident shooter who moves well without the ball in his hands, and he contributes on the glass. He finished with 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists in the loss.
Another confident shooter for the Chiefs who knocked down some big shots throughout the game, Hoard has good footwork and a quick release off the catch. He showed some playmaking and court vision as well, dishing out 4 assists to go with his 12 points.
Highlights
Jaxon Clark
Jaxon Clark
Clark may have been the most intriguing prospect on the floor, despite finishing with just 2 points, 5 rebounds, an assist, and a block. A raw young big man with legitimate size at 6-7, he has soft hands and moves pretty well for a young big of his size. It’s pretty clear that he’s still early in his development and has some catching up to do in terms of understanding of where to be on both ends of the floor, but his combination of size, mobility, hands, and raw potential make him a player that should be monitored closely over the next few years to see how he continues to develop.
