Continue ReadingReed left the game for a little while in Kennedy’s win over Cedar Falls with a stinger to his left shoulder area, but he was able to come back in the fourth quarter and was huge down the stretch as a calming presence, a veteran point guard who isn’t afraid to have the ball in his hands late in the game. He’s an outstanding ball-handler and decision-maker who rarely turns it over, a reliable free-throw shooter, and a true pass-first lead guard who loves to get others involved first, and then look for his own shot second. Where he stood out the most in their win over the Tigers, however, was as a defender. He was a key part of a Cougars defense that really frustrated Cedar Falls’ backcourt, putting a ton of pressure on the Tigers’ young guards. He moves his feet extremely well, stays in front of opposing guards, and has quick hands that he uses to make ball-handlers uncomfortable.
Highlights
Bear had 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists in the Tigers loss to Kennedy. The 6-8 wing is a sharpshooter with a lightning-quick release, a ton of range, and he moves well without the ball in his hands. He looked more comfortable as a ball-handler and playmaker, getting others involved and putting the ball on the floor and getting the defense to collapse then find an open teammate. A scrappy wing with tremendous length and the ability to get scorching hot, he was the focal point of the Kennedy gameplan, but to his credit, didn’t force much, taking what the defense was giving him.
Highlights
Evans had 14 points on 4-8 shooting (2-5 3P, 4-6 FT) and 12 rebounds in the Hawkeyes loss to a very good Western Christian team. A 6-6 combo forward, he has the ability to score both inside and out, showing a smooth stroke from the arc with a quick release off the catch. He moves really well without the ball in his hands, finding open spaces in the defense to get this shot off, and his release is high, which when coupled with his size, makes it difficult for opponents to contest his shot. He also has good footwork and touch on post touches, and is the type of player that the offense can flow through when he’s touching the ball anywhere below the free-throw line. He has the look of an ideal small-college forward with his ability to stretch the floor, defend a few different positions, and control the glass on both ends.
Van Regenmorter didn’t have a great shooting game in the Wolfpack’s win over West Harrison, but he found other ways to make an impact, finishing with 7 points (3-12 FG, 1-7 3P), 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. He’s a 6-5 power forward who is certainly capable of stepping out and stretching the floor, but appears to be at his best when he’s operating around the free-throw line or high post, where he can really utilize his court vision and passing skills to help facilitate the offense.
Highlights
By his standards, Kingery’s numbers in Indianola’s win over Ankeny were pedestrian – 11 points (4-7 FG, 1-2 3P, 2-3 FT), 10 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal. But that’s just a testament to how sensational he has been over the last three years that we’d see an efficient double-double as a quiet game. The 6-5 wing impacts the game in a major way on both ends of the floor, and in a game filled with talented players, the way he moves, passes, and sees the game were just noticeably different and on a higher level. He doesn’t force anything, is a gifted passer, a talented defender, is willing to stick his nose in on the glass, and is a versatile three-level scorer. Truman State is getting a really good one in Kingery.
Drea was dominant for the Indians against his former school, Ankeny, leading the team with 21 points on 8-14 shooting, including going 3-8 from behind the arc. A high IQ guard who really knows how to get to his spots, he has excellent footwork and the ability to finish either around or through contact around the bucket. He has great body control, is a really good ball-handler, and does a tremendous job changing speeds to help momentarily lose the defender. He’s a good shooter both off the dribble and the catch, and does a great job limiting turnovers and getting others involved. A solid on-ball defender who moves his feet well and contests shots without fouling, Drea had an outstanding all-around showing last week in the win.
Glascock had 8 points (4-5 FG), 3 rebounds, an assist, and a steal in Indianola’s win over Ankeny. A 6-2 wing, he looked much more comfortable handling the ball than he did a year ago, operating as a playmaker in the pick-and-roll on a few occasions and showing the ability to use ball screens to his advantage, turning the corner tight and getting to the rim for finishes where he displayed excellent body control, footwork, and touch. He had a beautiful move to end the first quarter in which he drove from the top of the key towards the left block, spun back into the middle of the paint, and got the shot to drop plus the foul.
Highlights
Willmott has really good footwork, touch, and patience on his post touches, and he does a great job utilizing shot fakes to get the defender either into the air or off-balance, then he’ll go about with his finish. He has a little bit of a throwback, back-to-the-basket skill set and is the type of player that the offense can flow through at times with his ability to read the floor and make the right decision with the ball in his hands. He had 10 points (5-7 FG), 5 rebounds, and 3 assists in the Indians win over Ankeny.
Severson poured in 16 points on 4-6 shooting (2-2 3P, 6-8 FT) in the Tigers’ narrow loss to Van Meter. He also had 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocks. A long, lanky wing who can impact the game on both ends of the floor with his size, athleticism, and length, he does a great job contesting shots and using his bounce to compete on the glass. He has a smooth stroke out to the arc and a quick release off the catch.
Highlights
Newell is really thin, but also has great length that he uses to dominate as a rim protector. He recorded 9 blocks in Madrid’s loss to go with 10 points and 8 rebounds. He has great timing as a shot blocker and is a game-changing presence on the defensive end. His offensive game is still a work in progress, but his size and defensive ability make him an intriguing prospect for small schools around the state to monitor.
A long, bouncy wing with great body control and athleticism, Netten had 10 points and 5 rebounds in the Bulldogs win over Madrid. Throughout the game he was able to showcase his ability to get to the rim for finishes or to get to the free-throw line, compete on the glass, and impact the game as a defender with his length and quickness.
