We’re only a few weeks into the season but a few teams have already risen to the level of the elite in some of the various classes across Oklahoma. One of those teams is Broken Arrow in Class 6A. The Tigers have begun their 2022-2023 season with a 6-0 record and have been absolutely dominant so far this season. The “closest” game they’ve had through their first six outings was a 17-point win over Booker T Washington at home. The Tigers are going to be in action next week but it’ll be out of state as they are headed to Orlando, Florida for a three-day tournament. They open up the tourney on Tuesday against Randor, Pennsylvania. The Tigers are in a bracket with teams from Louisiana, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas.
The Tigers have some legitimate star power with OSU signee Connor Dow Connor Dow 6'6" | SF Broken Arrow | 2023 State #252 Nation OK , a top five overall prospect in the state’s 2023 class. But what’s been really impressive to watch with the Tigers so far this season is the balance they have throughout their starting five. Dow has been their leading scorer but they are consistently putting multiple guys in double figures, along with Dow. We’re going to dive into some of their standouts below.
When the Tigers return home from Florida, they’ll have nearly two weeks off before hosting Owasso and getting back to their conference schedule. They will also be participating in the Shawnee tournament later in January, which has a very improved tournament field this year. So the Tigers are going to be tested in the next month but right now, they look like a legitimate threat to Edmond North’s throne atop Class 6A. Everyone is chasing Edmond North at this point but the Tigers seem to have the manpower to push them.
Below, we take a look at three players for Broken Arrow that have stood out in a variety of ways after a few weeks of basketball.
Broken Arrow’s Connor Dow Connor Dow 6’6″ | SF Broken Arrow | 2023 State #252 Nation OK has had a few weeks of showcasing what some of our writers saw throughout the offseason while he played for Team Griffin. Dow’s game reached an all time high this offseason and he became hands down one of the top overall prospects in the state’s 2023 class. Now that we’re a few weeks into his senior season, he has backed up all of the hype and then some. And what’s scary is the fact that the Tigers haven’t needed Dow to play Superman for them so far this season. That’s because of the depth and skill in this Broken Arrow lineup. But we’ve also seen Dow start to flirt with that Superman label. He’s had performances where he heats up in the blink of an eye and puts up 20 in a single half and has made it look easy. As the competition gets tougher, we expect him to continue to elevate his game.
Back in the preseason, we wrote about Broken Arrow sophomore David Howell David Howell 6’4″ | PG Broken Arrow | 2025 State #329 Nation OK and how he was arguably the most intriguing player to watch on Broken Arrow’s team this season. We knew what we were going to get from Dow and some of the other seniors. But we wanted to see what steps Howell would make this year after starting last season as a freshman. So far this season, Howell is playing more of a point guard role and getting others involved. He hasn’t been asked to do a lot in terms of scoring and creating for himself, but when he has done either of those things, he’s been successful. The handful of times we’ve watched the Tigers so far this year, the passing and play creating for others is what has really stood out to us so far this season. Howell has been impressive so far this year.
When we talk about Broken Arrow’s lineup and how they can beat teams with their length, their balance and their depth, senior Justice Sutton Justice Sutton 6’5″ | SF Broken Arrow | 2023 State OK is the perfect example of that. Sutton has made scoring in double figures a regular occurrence this season and he has provided a boost to a Broken Arrow offense that was already pretty solid coming into this season. We wrote about Sutton last week when the Tigers took down Booker T Washington and Sutton led the team with 23 points. He has that capability of leading the team in scoring, or just playing his role and creating on the offensive end of the floor when asked to do so. And at 6’5, Sutton provides yet another long athlete that is capable of going off on any given night. There are a few other examples like Sutton as well, making BA very dangerous.
