Royal would be my pick for the award, he came close to winning it as a Junior after leading Pickerington Central to a state championship. One of the most dominant high school players Ohio has seen in the past couple years, Royal is set to put up crazy numbers as a senior in a run it back type season.
Another prospect who had a legit case to win the award last winter, Swain makes things look easy on the court. A switch was flipped after halftime of the city league championship as Swain dominated after that moment to win a city league, district and regional championship.
The winner of the award last season, Gabe Cupps Gabe Cupps 6’1″ | PG Centerville | 2023 State #80 Nation OH will once again be looking to bring the hardware home. After graduating some key scorers, Cupps should have bigger numbers this season as Centerville looks to reclaim their crown.
Winning Mr. Basketball as an underclassman is incredibly difficult but if anybody were to do it, it would be Peterson. A consensus top 10 prospect in the nation for the class of 2025, there isn’t a more talented player in the OHSAA this season.
A newcomer to the state, Washington III comes from Kentucky and will hope to give Chaminade Julienne the help they need to get over the hump and win a state title. The future Michigan Wolverine is one of the most exciting players to watch in Ohio.
Burgess just played a marquee scrimmage against Isaiah Collier, one of the top seniors in the country. Burgess and his squad went blow for blow with one of the top public schools in the country and if Burgess can lead Sycamore to a GMC and regional title, he’ll have a case for Mr. Basketball.
McCulloch leads a stacked Lutheran East squad as they come into the season as heavy favorites to win the Division III title. After blowing up on the EYBL circuit this summer, he’s ready to dominate in the winter as well.
The biggest Ohio to Ohio transfer of the summer, Powell is set to provide the scoring punch Centerville needs to continue to compete for a state championship. Powell also shined playing up 17 U this summer on the 3SSB circuit with Wildcats Select and will look to continue that momentum.
Rice will try and lead Wayne back to the GWOC championship as he’s put-up big-time numbers since his freshman season. The future Murray State Racer is one of the most athletic guards in the state and a joy to watch each time he steps on the court.
Parks will need to increase his scoring to have a chance to win this award but after a deep playoff run last season and some development in the summer, Parks could be a sleeper for this award as the future Ohio State Buckeye has the size and athletic advantage on just about anybody.
Two straight seasons falling just short of a state championship, White will look to get over the hump and cement himself as one of the top players in the state. Ottawa-Glandorf has a rich basketball tradition and will once again be one of the top dogs in Division III.
Skaljac is one of the most skilled guards in the state and had his big coming out party at Saint Edward as a Sophomore. If he can keep Brecksville in the state title hunt all season, he’ll be in the conversation for this award.
Highlights
Another one of the most talented players in the state, as just a Sophomore Easter has unfinished business after being hurt for the playoffs last season. If he can lead Emmanuel Christian deep in the playoffs and continue to put up absurd numbers, then watch out.
Another Sophomore on a team with state title aspirations and ranked in the top 50 of 247’s 2025 national rankings. Jones will look to take a step as the now leader of a Richmond Heights team looking to go back-to-back.
Last player on this 15-player list and it’s a bit of a sleeper but Dudukovich has put up insane stats in the GMC over the past couple seasons and should be one of the leading scorers in Division I this season.
