ALEXANDRIA, VA -- The top two teams from our year-end power rankings met in a preseason scrimmage on Tuesday. The aggregate score after 5 8-minute periods read Sidwell 72, Hayfield 68. Here are some takeaways from the action.

[player_tooltip player_id='1115503' first='Greg' last='Jones'] is a tone-setter on defense

The American commit picks up full consistently. He rotates and communicates well. Jones took a charge during the scrimmage. Something he will probably do frequently throughout the season.

Pickens emerging for Sidwell

[player_tooltip player_id='1331783' first='Selden' last='Pickens'] looks like he will be a threat. The Quakers' wing is a deadeye from three. He shot the ball with confidence.

Rougier-Roane is blossoming

With an automatic jump shot, [player_tooltip player_id='1370500' first='Jalen' last='Rougier-Roane'] is a technically sound player. He demonstrates quick reaction time and plays with tremendous effort. Rougier-Roane made winning plays like deflections and offensive rebounds out of his area. His spacing and ball movement also stood out.

Good transition defense from the Quakers

Sidwell clearly emphasizes getting back on defense. Hayfield's opportunities in transition were limited as a result. Notably, guys like [player_tooltip player_id='1370500' first='Jalen' last='Rougier-Roane'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1127314' first='Caleb' last='Williams'] were often the first guys back to guard the basket.

[player_tooltip player_id='1256339' first='Donovan' last='Bass'] is a dynamic addition to Hayfield

The ambidextrous guard is a reliable scorer and playmaker on both ends of the floor. Bass looks like he will be one of the main go-to guys for Coach Poindexter this year.

Williams shines on both ends

It's a luxury for Sidwell to have a player with [player_tooltip player_id='1127314' first='Caleb' last='Williams']' versatility. [player_tooltip player_id='1403962' first='David' last='King'] was a load for Hayfield, but Williams made it difficult for him at times because of his physicality and length. That length enabled Williams to finish in a variety of ways on offense as well. He has options. Williams can post or face up and attack.

[player_tooltip player_id='1225257' first='Acaden' last='Lewis'] adds solid depth to the backcourt

Lewis provides instant offense. He gets paint touches. Lewis can score and create open shots for others.

[player_tooltip player_id='1403962' first='David' last='King'] is relentless

The Marymount commit would not be denied. He simply finds ways to score. King has impeccable footwork and nice touch.

[player_tooltip player_id='1598943' first='Parker' last='Cage'] impresses

Voted a game-changer at our Top 250 expo in the fall, Cage looks like he will be a confident impact player off the bench for Coach Poindexter. The sophomore guard was a difference-maker both defensively and offensively. Cage was shot-ready from the catch and wasn't scared to let it fly.
