Boona will step into a much bigger role for Columbia Heights this season, and will be the size they need to compete against some of the better teams in their conference/class. At 6’7 he’s a big body down low who’s not afraid to play with some physicality. In the game I saw he did a nice job of sealing off his defender and providing good angles for his guards to get him the ball. Really good at making quick cuts into space when his teammates drive, allowing him to quickly catch and finish off dump-off passes. Good hands, strength to power through contact, and soft touch around the basket.
Gavin Luick
Gavin Luick
Gavin looks ready to breakout as a senior and provide an extra scoring punch for Jefferson. The long and lanky lefty showcased a dangerous pull-up jumper against Waconia with the confidence and handle to create his own shot. Isn’t super quick or explosive but plays with good pace and has a nice hesitation on the ball to help him create space for his jumper. The lefty guard is someone that will have to be accounted for from beyond the arc, and will help spread the floor to create some driving lanes for his teammates.
Gavin makes the game look effortless at times. You’ll rarely see him force his game offensively, and instead remains active off the ball and waits for the right moments to take his shots. When you combine his shot selection with a high level shooting ability from three, it makes for a very efficient scoring option. Prior Lake doesn’t have the big name prospects of some other big schools, but they looked to be well-rounded as everyone looked to share the ball and it allowed them to open up plenty of good looks. Gavin will be one of the go-to scorers this winter, and if he shoots it like he did on Sunday he could be in for a nice senior season.
Austin faced off against a fast paced Minneapolis North team that was pressing for just about the whole game. Jack was able to take advantage of that press at times as once his team beat the trap, it gave Austin a temporary numbers advantage allowing Jack to move off the ball and find space to get off a three. Lang has a very quick release from beyond the arc with no shortage of confidence in his shot. Had a run in the second half hitting three threes in a row and helping Austin nearly come back.
Highlights
Moe Jones Jr.
Moe Jones Jr.
Minneapolis North has a handful of options to play down low this season, with Moe being one of the players ready to step into a bigger role. Against Austin he was running the floor hard to pick up some transition buckets, and used his length to cause some disruptions in the full-court press. Moves well at 6’6 which fits into North’s defensive scheme as they were flying all over the floor looking to force errors and tip passes. In the half-court he also looked like he can be trusted from beyond the arc as he had a smooth looking jumper and knocked down a three when given the space.
Buai will man the post for Austin, and is someone who plays a bit bigger than his size. He has very long arms, and because of that he’s a good rebounder on both ends of the floor who can secure the ball with two hands but also does a good job of tipping the ball out on the offensive end to help keep possessions alive. Duop does a nice job establishing low post position on the block, using his strength to back his man down and then providing a target showing his hands. If he catches around the rim he rarely seems to miss as he has excellent touch even in traffic.
Burnsville has some nice talent and could be a much improved team this winter. One of their key returners is Henry Saykeo Henry Saykeo 5’11” | PG Burnsville | 2023 State MN who will be relied upon to handle the ball at times while also being a scoring threat at times. He has a nice handle with the ability to get a little flashy with it and create his own shot when necessary. Against Prior Lake he showcased a nice looking jumper which will also allow him to be a threat off the ball. Averaged 12.6 ppg last season, and with the talent around him, if he’s able to facilitate at a high level this team could be competitive with many.
