After graduating a loaded 2022 class, there are plenty of new faces on the team, and these are seven prospects who impressed at their open gym yesterday.
Abdi Bashir
Abdi Bashir
Abdi played a key role off the bench last season before putting together a solid spring/summer with D1 Minnesota. He now looks to be one of the main scoring options for this team, and he’ll have the ball in his hands quite a bit. At 6’6 he’s very long and lanky, and spent time at both guard spots in the runs yesterday. He’s really fluid with the ball in his hands and is so dangerous creating space from beyond the arc as well as in the mid-range area to get off shots. When he looked to create his own shot, he was able to get a solid look off just about every time. Abdi is an absolute sharp shooter from deep who will make you pay for giving him an inch of space. I thought Abdi did a nice job of being a vocal leader on the floor, and was making sure his guys were in the right spots on both ends. Should be in for a productive senior year on the Grind Session.
Tyler Mason Tyler Mason 6’10” | PF Bishop Walsh | 2023 VA has transferred to Minnesota Prep and reclassified to the 2024 class, and although he’s still raw he has some nice tools to work with. He has a strong frame at 6’10 and showed some nice flashes of post footwork. When he was patient on the block he was able to get defenders in the air with crisp pivots and shot fakes, and showed some touch with his left hand. Had a few two hand dunks off dump off passes, and could become very dangerous around the rim if he gets a bit quicker off the floor. Tyler did the bulk of his work down low but was flashing a nice looking outside jumper with the left hand.
Highlights
The former Austin standout is now at Minnesota Prep as a class of 2023 guard, and he had a number of highlight plays running the point for his team. He’s extremely explosive with a quick first step to get by his initial defender and get to the lane. Showed he has the bounce to finish above the rim when he has a path to the rim, and even threw one down over a 6’10 defender. Very impressive athlete who also excelled at driving into the lane and kicking it out to his shooters on the perimeter. Quick hands defensively and was able to create a handful of steals to get out into transition for easy scores.
Jinup Dobuol
Jinup Dobuol
Jinup had made some big strides in his game from a year ago, and now looks like he’ll play a strong role in this team as a junior. He’s grown a bit more to about 6’7-6’8, but offers some mobility on the wing. Jinup handles the ball well at his size to create his own shots going towards the basket, and is a big time catch-and-shoot threat with his quick release from three. Was also a bit more explosive around the rim throwing down a few dunks in transition and also having a nice block at the rim. High potential prospect from St. Cloud.
Cham Okey Cham Okey 6’3″ | SG Austin | 2023 MN is now at Minnesota Prep and has reclassed to the 2024 class. He’s a skilled scoring wing with a solid frame and great patience when attacking the basket. Never looked sped up on the ball and had some nice finishes at the rim against size. Cham isn’t super quick but does a nice job of changing up his speeds in order to beat his man off the dribble. Also provides an additional outside shooting threat from beyond the arc.
Akeem is a pass-first point guard who is back for his senior year after missing his junior season and a majority of this past summer with an injury. Defensviely he loves to pressure the ball and is so good at trapping/doubling the ball and forcing turnovers with his quick hands. Did a nice job of poking the ball free and getting out in transition where he makes good decisions on whether to pass or finish. At his best looking to get into the paint off the dribble and dumping it off to his bigs or kicking it out to an open shooter.
Muja averaged close to 23 ppg last season at Columbia Heights, and will now be looking to add an additional scoring weapon to Minnesota Prep’s roster. He has a long and lanky frame on the wing and is so good at creating space on the perimeter to get off his shot. When you combine that with a three point stroke that hit at 38.5% last winter, and it makes for a dangerous shooting threat. He’s not just a shooter though as he has some wiggle attacking the basket and is a really crafty finisher who has an impressive lay-up package.
