Sorensen is a prospect I caught at during the first July live period with Wildcats Select 15 U. I was impressed by his shot-making at his size and overall feel for the game. Sorensen shot a high percentage from the floor and didn’t turn the ball over. Sorensen is also coming off an impressive showing at the CP3 camp, where the lefty showed his shooting ability, defensive IQ and ability to use his size and frame around the rim to finish. Sorensen will be playing for Western Reserve Academy, one of the top prep programs in the Midwest. It’ll be interesting to see how many minutes he plays this season with the amount of older talent on their roster. Regardless of his minutes this winter, this is a prospect you’ll be hearing a lot about during the next couple years.
Leach is a prospect who never stops defensively and found a nice niche on Bates Fundamentals when I watched him play. Leach is one of the best on-ball defenders in the 2025 class, capable of defending positions 1-3 on the opposing team. Leach will be expected to take a larger scoring role this winter after star Chico Johnson Chico Johnson 6’2″ | SG Toledo Central Catholic | 2023 State OH suffered an unfortunate injury this summer that will keep him out of some, if not all, of the high school season. Leach is going to get more reps being a ball handler in the pick and roll and figuring out how to handle increased defensive pressure. On the EYBL circuit, improving his catch and shoot ability will make him more of a threat and help with his teams floor spacing.
Monterrubio was a key member of a Gurus of Go squad that dominated the Adidas Gold 15 U circuit this spring and summer. With a style of play focused on ball movement and shooting, Monterrubio will feel comfortable this winter with the Jackson Polar Bears, looking to have the same success with a similar style. Monterrubio was the most impressive athlete on his Gurus of Go squad, having the most success beating defenders off the bounce and typically guarding one of the opposing teams best scorers. Monterrubio continuing to expand his offensive game will be a key this varsity season as Jackson lost a lot of guard talent. Monterrubio will have the chance to create for others and look to score for himself as just a Sophomore in a Federal league that requires toughness, experience and skill.
Highlights
Another Adidas Gold 15 U standout, Lyall was one of the top prospects for the Mid Ohio Pumas 15 U squad. Lyall is bigger than his older brother Luke who was also a two sport stud for the Scotties. Max has a bigger frame which certainly helps him on the gridiron but also allows him to push around smaller defenders on the basketball court. A capable shooter off the catch or bounce, there’s been a few games where Lyall caught fire from outside. I expect Lyall to be one of the most productive players in the MVL as a Sophomore in the 2022-23 season.
Brown was a standout for the Nova Village 15 U squad that won the UA Rise championship. Brown showed some impressive ability to beat defenders off the bounce and use his size to score over smaller defenders and his fluidity with the ball to blow past slower defenders. Brown showed some real upside this summer and did it on a winning team. This winter, Olentangy Orange has high expectations and Brown is expected to be a key piece to that squad as well. I’ll be watching Brown closely because with the guard talent that Olentangy Orange has, he could be the beneficiary of the defensive attention they will receive. This winter could be the blow up Brown is looking for if he can play within the offense and lock down defensively.
