Greer had ice in his veins throughout the weekend thanks to elite shotmaking and unique composure when the game was on the line. The 5’10 point guard was easily one of the three most damaging shooters in the building, both off the catch and dribble. Greer proved to be dangerous on all three levels, where he was more than capable stepping into college distance threes or taking to the rack and finishing high arcing shots above bigs. Transition was an area Greer surprised me, as he was more than capable grabbing a defensive board and taking it to the rack in less than five seconds. Despite his size, Greer did well containing opposing guards thanks to his quick hands and shifty hips. Continuing to leverage his scoring gravity to create scoring opportunities for teammates will be essential for Greer’s growth down the road.
Narit Chotikavanic – 2024 – F5 – McMillen
Chotikavanic was another incredibly polished combo guard at 6’1, he was capable scoring at all three levels while proving to be a dependable defender against guards. Quite simply, the guard is ahead of his age level, dropping multiple 20+ point games and a 30 point game in the weekend. What stands out with Chotikavanic outside his shooting ability was his ability to read plays before they happened, as he stayed aggressive in the passing lanes, contributing 2+ steals per game. During half court presses, he was instrumental in guiding opponents towards the corners and sidelines, leading to quite a few turnovers.
Charley Reado – 2024 – Fresno Flyers Elite (FFE) – Elkins
Reado got the rim with ease as a 6’1 lanky, two-way combo guard boasting an intriguing blend of scoring instincts and passing vision. One of the more daring ballhandlers this weekend, Reado had a knack for splitting double teams out of on-ball screens. Once he got inside, he was excellent as a finisher off either foot. He showed his floater game on multiple occassions, which was incredibly dangerous considering how quickly he gets downhill. While Reado did not take a ton of threes when I was present, he has all the traits needed to be at least a dependable shooter off the catch and bounce. Thanks to his long strides and awareness, Reado was excellent defensively both on and off the ball. He was notable doing the little things, such as fronting a post mismatch or communicating on a needed rotation.
Randy Bennett Jr – 2023 – DC Kings Denton – Braswell
Bennett was another excellent shooter off the catch and coming off a couple dribbles, typically favoring the right hand. This Kings Denton group was unable to miss open threes, Bennett was one of their largest contributors from beyond. Although Bennett is not your traditional primary ballhandler, he was an efficient scorer who could do a lot with a couple dribbles.
KJ Sykes – 2023 – Mamba Wolfpack – Clinton Christian
Sykes was a consistent jolt of energy as the lead ballhandler with the 3-1 Mamba Wolfpack group. The point guard stands at roughly 5’10, although his height did not deter him from creating opportunities inside. Sykes had to be one of the three best ballhandlers in the gym, allowing him to change speeds and creating scoring opportunities for himself and teammates. Every couple possessions, Sykes would zip a dart through multiple guys, often times with one hand. Like Greer, Sykes routinely pushed the pace with or without the ball, creating easy transition opportunities.
