Here’s a look at NorCal players who we thought played well during the first live period this past week at the WCE Hoop Review Event. This is a group of underclassmen in the class of 2023, 2024 who are more of the wings and forward type.

Kyshawn Johnson 6’5 2024 W/F of Fresno Wildcats Elite U16 (Bullard HS, Fresno CA)

He’s a long active player who was good in transition, he has long strides and hustle to fill the lanes. He was good finishing around the basket after receiving the pass. His length, along with good patience in the paint made him an effective player working in and around the paint. He hit a couple jumpers the free throw area. He has the foot speed to guard on the perimeter, and the length to defend in the post.

Isreal Washington 6’8 2023 W/F of Sacramento Hoyas (Valley HS)

We liked the activity Washington had working in and around the free throw area, and from the short corner. He has a good high arching jump shot that’s hard to block, and it goes in more often than not. He has good bounce, he runs the middle of the court, and was aggressive looking to finish at the rim. He’s a long armed defender that will change some shots in the paint.

[player_tooltip player_id="1382860" first="Marcellus" last="Jackson"] 6’6 2024 SF of Clutch Elite 16U (Capital Christian HS)

Jackson is a jumping jack going after blocks and rebounds. He he has good timing and will go out of his space to block a shot. He’s still developing his skill set on the offensive side of the ball, but he has the size and strength to be an effective scorer in and around the basket. He’ll finish with good power going up.

Gregory Piotrowski 6’6 2024 PF of Team Sacramento Pharoahs 17’s Black (Franklin HS)

He’s a big body that’s starting to understand his size can benefit him on the court. He sets solid screens, he’s hard to get around. He works best in the post area, but he did step out and hit a 3ptr. He’ll work to move bodies in the paint going for rebounds. He’s still developing other tools, we could see improvement down the road.

Hugo Rutherfurd 6’9 2023 PF of Bay City Warriors 17U AS (San Francisco Waldorf HS)

Most would agree he’s a project maybe, nevertheless, the 6’9 post player from a small school in San Francisco plays basketball and can improve over time in the right environment. He can change shots in the paint, he does okay defending his position in the post, and he makes a good effort to run the court and get his rebounds. He has good fundamentals, with a good upside. We’ll see more.

[player_tooltip player_id="950931" first="Chris" last="Naulls"] 6’7 2023 PF of 17U SV (Christopher HS)

Naulls has a solid body, and a good skill set working from the high post and in. He can knock down the elbow jumper, use one dribble to get to the front of the rim, and he finishes well off two feet when he’s balanced. He has a good mid-post face up off the dribble, he’ll hit the short corner jumper along the baseline. He’s a big body and can defend his position in the post. He has some tools to work with.

Judah Flores 6’6 2024 W/F of Fresno Wildcats Elite U16 (Modesto Christian, HS)

Flores is a long active player he’s a bit on the thin side, but he was effective with his length getting points and going after rebounds in the paint. He worked well along the baseline finishing at the rim and hitting the short corner jumper. The lefty can get to the basket from the high post, hit the paint jumper. He made good passes into the post. He covers a lot of ground from post to perimeter, blocking shots and disrupting corner shooters with his length. He’s on the Wright’s Watch List.
