Continue ReadingWith a full season of high school hoops and a handful of spring club events under our belt, the Prep Hoops SoCal Staff was able to get a good grip on the class of 2023, which led to our latest update to the rising senior rankings. In this piece we breakdown what the combo guard position looks like in the class.
Dusty Stromer Dusty Stromer 6'5" | SG Notre Dame | 2023 State #47 Nation CA-S , Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, No. 1 CG/No. 5 overall – We went in-depth on Stomer’s game in our breakdown of the top 10 players in the class, and the reason why he’s the top combo guard is his ability to effect the game as a scorer from multiple levels, while also possessing the IQ and playmaking ability to play on the ball and initiate offense when needed.
Rodney Brown Rodney Brown 6'6" | CG Rancho Christian | 2023 State #163 Nation CA-S , Rancho Christian, No. 2 CG/No. 15 overall – Brown is oozing with untapped potential in addition to his already-impressive all-around game. The wiry 6-foot-6 guard stamped himself this season a consistent three-point shooter off the catch who also attacked closeouts and got to the rim where he used his length to finish over interior defenders. Brown has the handle and passing IQ to make high level reads in both transition and half-court settings.
Jaqari Miles Jaqari Miles 6'2" | CG West Ranch | 2023 State CA-S , West Ranch, No. 3 CG/No. 20 overall – Miles is wired to score and was in the perfect high school system to allow him to play to his strength. The 6-foot-1 guard is the definition of a shot-maker as he can elevate over defenders and hit jumpers off the dribble or used his quickness and strength to bully his way to the paint for a tough floater or mid-range jumper.
Jaden Matingou Jaden Matingou 6'3" | CG St. Augustine | 2023 State CA-S , St. Augustine, No. 4 CG, No. 32 overall – Matingou is one of the best pure athletes in the region and, from what we have seen from him this spring, he’s starting to put the skill with that athleticism to become a versatile all-around player. Matingou is a great slasher and finisher off the ball who can also break down a defender in isolation and get into the teeth of the defense where he can make a decision on whether to score or distribute.
Maurice Wright Maurice Wright 6'2" | CG Santa Clarita Christian | 2023 State CA-S , Santa Clarita Christian, No. 5 CG/No. 37 overall – Wright is a consistent producer of points, rebounds and assists who we’ve covered a lot over the last four years. The 6-foot-2 guard is as steady and consistent as they come at this position and you always know Wright will give 100 percent of his energy on both ends of the floor.
