In the first game, Gary 21st Century and Lafayette Central Catholic battled in a back and forth affair that ended up going to overtime before Lafayette Central Catholic pulled it out in the end. Then, in the 4A North matchup, Chesterton outlasted Kokomo in an amazing defensive battle that came down to each team having a chance to win it in the final 10 seconds. Now, let’s take a look at the best guards in these two games.
Player Evaluations
Zavion Bellamy Zavion Bellamy 5'10" | PG Kokomo | 2023 IN – 2023 6’0” PG – Kokomo
Bellamy is a quick guard who looks to get inside the lane and score the basketball, but he was forcing early on for Kokomo and really struggled from the floor. He has nice mechanics on his floater and gets good looks, but he wasn’t really using his legs which caused him to be consistently short on his shots. Bellamy did not score in the loss on 0-7 shooting, but this team will be back next year, and he will play a big role for them once again.
Zion Bellamy Zion Bellamy 5'8" | PG Kokomo | 2025 State IN – 2025 5’8” PG – Kokomo
Bellamy is a quick freshman whose speed and quickness are the best parts of his game at the moment. Bellamy gets the ball and immediately looks to go and push the tempo. He looked to drive every time that he touched the basketball with some good touch around the rim, but he does seem to rush sometimes.
Quintin Floyd Quintin Floyd 6'4" | SG Gary 21st Century | 2023 State IN – 2023 6’4” SG – Gary 21st Century
Floyd is a quick little guard who seems to be everywhere on the court. He struggled from the outside, but he has a good rhythm on his jumps and his athleticism is off the charts. He did not have his best game in this one, but he has a ton of potential. He should be playing Division 3 or NAIA basketball in two years, and a lot of that will depend on this summer.
Travis Grayson Travis Grayson 5'10" | PG Chesterton | 2022 State IN – 2022 5’10” PG – Chesterton
Grayson is a tough guard who has been one of the best guards in the state, and this semi-state performance was absolutely no different. Grayson was attacking the rim and always looking to take control of the game. He did not have much help, but he did not need it as he scored 27 points on 6-13 shooting. He also came up with 4 steals on the defensive end of the floor. The big thing for Grayson though was that he was able to attack and draw fouls, and he shot 15-16 from the free-throw line. There is absolutely no reason why he does not have any offers right now, and I promise any coach in the country that they would not regret having him on their ball club.
Ben Mazur Ben Mazur 6'0" | SG Lafayette Central Catholic | 2023 IN – 2023 6’2” SG – Lafayette Central Catholic
Mazur is a smaller guard whose shooting was huge for the Knights in this one. Mazur knocked down two huge triples throughout the game as he ended with 10 points. He also controlled the offense for the Knights and helped keep them calm under pressure. Mazur is going to be in line for a big season next year with the absences of Barrett and Obermiller on the inside.
Tyler Parrish Tyler Parrish 6'3" | SG Chesterton | 2024 State IN – 2024 6’2” SG – Chesterton
Parrish is a quick little guard who was able to get inside and compete with the big men from Kokomo. He also has a really good three-point stroke though his shots were not falling for him. Parrish has had a very good sophomore season, but it did not come together for him Saturday. I am looking forward to seeing how he grows over the next two years.
Ashton Williamson Ashton Williamson 6'2" | PG Gary 21st Century | 2023 State #287 Nation IN – 2023 6’4” SG – Gary 21st Century
Williamson was the best player on the court with absolutely no debate in this one, but he struggled shooting the ball and continually seemed like he was forcing around the rim. He is quick, plays with a ton of confidence, and his vision on both ends of the floor is top-notch. He ended with 27 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists, and 6 steals in the loss. There is no doubt in my mind that he will be playing mid-major basketball two years from now. Coaches should get on this kid!
