Wednesday December 8th-Saturday December 11th I attended the Hoophall West at Chaparral HS in Scottsdale, AZ.

There were three to four games a day with many Arizona teams playing in the prestigious West Coast event.

We look at some of the top performers.

Here were the top SG Performers:

2022

[player_tooltip player_id="1227671" first="Chance" last="Westry"] AZ Compass Prep

A natural downhill scorer makes it look easy during stretches. Once he gets a step on you, it’s usually a bucket or he gets fouled. He has good length to play the passing lanes and he makes all the difference for this teams success.

[player_tooltip player_id="701238" first="Garrison" last="Phelps"] St. Mary’s

Phelps had a monster game versus Brophy Prep. Only 6 pt at halftime but he had a huge 3rd and 4th quarters for 27 pts total. He hit multiple catch or pull from the 3pt line. He defends in the post and out on the perimeter. His ball rotation is slowly improving as he ages. He crashed the glass well and got to the line.

[player_tooltip player_id="826996" first="Patrick" last="Chew"] Brophy Prep

A tough and physical guard does many little things to affect a game. He is a good passer, he rebounds in and out of his area and will battle down low on put backs or floaters. He defends and plays multiple positions for them.

[player_tooltip player_id="936379" first="AJ" last="Riggs"] Highland (Pictured Right)

One of the better shooters in 6A. His pull-up from mid-range is becoming a weapon. His catch 3pt shot is money. He is smart to relocate to an open spot and you don’t see him take bad shots. His IQ and shooting are his big strengths.

[player_tooltip player_id="936759" first="Mason" last="Knollmiller"] Highland (Pictured Left)

An athletic guard has unreal speed in the open court. Every time I view him, i say the same thing, he outraces anyone in the open court like a track athlete. He has a good layup package and he seems to glide in the air with grace. He leaps for runner/floaters and he had a game high 23 points.

[player_tooltip player_id="936768" first="Tanner" last="Pate"] Mountain Pointe

The teams shooter keeps getting a little better each season. His 3pt stroke looks good every attempt. He can also pull-up from mid-range off the dribble making him a tougher cover.

[player_tooltip player_id="1345687" first="Jeffrey" last="Brazziel"] Dream City Christian

A smooth lefty scorer with long arms loves getting downhill. He is from Milwaukee,WI and is very competitive on the defensive side. He has a nice floater/runner game and will defend the 1-3. He is a capable shooter from mid to the 3 but he definitely prefers and thrives touching the paint and scoring in the lane.

2023

[player_tooltip player_id="814036" first="Tru" last="Washington"] Mountain Pointe

A downhill lefty guard is extremely active on defense. His motor is big time. His effort to want to grab a rebound is second to none. He can pull-up off the dribble from the 3pt line and his athletic gifts show up on defense. He blocks shots, collects steals and outworks his opponents. He impressed me with his passing and defensive ability.

[player_tooltip player_id="831118" first="Emery" last="Young"] Centennial

Another tough guard has made a step in the right direction this season. Without their senior star, Young has stepped in and become that go-to scorer. He hits catch-3’s and gets many put backs in the paint. He uses his strength and length to rebound. He scored 20 points versus Highland.

[player_tooltip player_id="1138592" first="Aiden" last="Price"] Mountain Pointe

A sturdy framed guard is tough and skilled. His pull-up from mid-range is his best skill to go along with his tough on-ball defense. He takes care of the ball, takes high percentage shots and makes good reads to teammates.
