I was able to stop by the tournament this week and there was a lot of strong teams and good talent. Here’s a quick look at a few of the 2022 standouts I saw.
1. Bret Fast – St Monica
Fast stood out to me for his defensive effort. He plays good defense whether it’s on the perimeter or even in the paint. He contests jumpers well and he contests drives at the rim. Reads the passing lanes well and forces turnovers/deflections. He sprints back defensively in transition. Offensively, he’s a good shooter from three-point range off the catch. He can handle the ball in transition but he moves well without the ball too. Good rebounder.
2. Sam Slutske Sam Slutske 6'0" | PG Crossroads | 2022 State CA-S – Crossroads
Slutske really stood out as a passer/playmaker. He has good vision in the halfcourt and does a good job finding cutters around the rim or kicking out to shooters. He’s a pass first player, but he can score the ball too. He has a nice crossover to get into the lane and he can pull-up for a jumper or a floater. He has a good off the dribble game and he can hit defenders with a quick burst of speed on his way to the rim.
3. Zion Bennett – Crenshaw
Bennett is a good finisher around the rim and he moves well without the ball. Does a good job slipping to the rim and finishing through traffic/bigger defenders. He runs the floor well in transition and he can handle the ball a little bit. When he’s on ball, he makes strong, decisive moves to the rim. Can shoot from three-point range. Defensively, he gets back in transition and he uses his length to contest shots well.
4. Larry Olayinka – Birmingham
Olayinka has pretty good defensive instincts. He times his blocks well and he uses his length and mobility to contest shots in the paint. He’s very active around the rim. He crashes the glass well especially on the offensive end. He looks to go up strong to finish at the rim, but has to do a little bit better job of finishing. He’s very athletic and he sprints out down court on the break.
