Yet last season, Maxim Wu Maxim Wu 6'0" | PG Wilsonville | 2023 State OR found himself in the starting lineup. The skilled 6-foot-1, 150-pound point guard settled into the backcourt as a sophomore and worked hard this off-season in order to step up into a bigger role for the Wildcats as a junior.
“I played with the school team for summer ball in June but I didn’t play club ball as I was focused mainly on lifting, developing, and getting better,” Wu said. “I worked on my athleticism, shooting, ball-handling, just my overall skills.”
Wu made his mark in the shortened 2021 season as a key contributor for Wilsonville. In the games we watched, the point guard really impressed us not only with his basketball IQ and floor leadership, he was outstanding with his on-the-ball defense. With much of the offensive load going to the seniors, his focus was on leading the team and playing hard on both ends.
“It was definitely a new experience,” Wu said. “We were a pretty young team and my role was to mostly defend the best perimeter player on the other team. It was overall pretty good.”
Wu is ready to take on additional responsibilities this season and one of the things on his radar is playing at the next level. A brilliant student with a 4.4 GPA, there’s no question that what a college program can provide him academically is a major factor in what he’s looking for.
“I’d like to go to a high-academic school and play basketball there, whether that be D-I, D-II, or D-III,” Wu said. “I’m wide open. I’m looking at (going into) business, economics, entrepreneurship.”
College is still two years away so there are still games to be played at the high school level. For Wu and Wilsonville, they are hoping that the 2021-22 season will be special.
“We have a good team and I think we’ll be a contender for the state title,” Wu said. “We have a good league and I’m overall excited for the season.”
Wu currently ranks as the #33 ranked player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2023 rankings.
