I have already completed the Point Guards, so be sure to check that out and stay following for the wings and centers.
Elmore James Elmore James 6'4" | SG Brush | 2022 State OH , 6’4 SG Brush 2022: James recently committed to Ohio University, James projects to fill a role that Lunden McDay has played the last two seasons as McDay will be a senior when James enrolls as a Freshman. James has the body and defensive ability to be a plug and play guy from day one in the MAC, like McDay was. Ohio is projected to have much more depth when James steps on campus compared to McDay, so don’t expect James to start from day one like McDay. I always have liked how James plays off ball on offense, using cuts better than most players his age. His scoring load took a major increase for Brush, as he was one of the leading scorers in the state as a Junior. I was hoping this scoring increase would translate to the EYBL, but James didn’t stand out for All Ohio Red offensively in North Augusta.
Roderick Coffee Roderick Coffee 6'4" | SG Spire | 2022 State OH , 6’4 SG Spire 2022: Coffee was one of the few 2022 players I had pegged as a Division I prospect that I didn’t see during the high school season. It seemed like there wasn’t a lot of people talking about his play at Spire either so he kinda fell off the radar for a bit. That all changed during the live period down in Birmingham, Coffee was sensational for Wildcats Select as he was scoring the ball at a very efficient clip, making numerous shots from the outside. I’m surprised Coffee hasn’t had any offers since July of 2020, I felt like his performance during the first July live period was more than impressive enough to warrant some new offers. With his size and potential lead guard capability, I think Coffee is at least a mid major caliber guard.
Bowen Hardman Bowen Hardman 6'4" | SG Princeton | 2022 State OH , 6’4 SG Princeton 2022: Hardman had an interesting grassroots season, he began with Wildcats Select and had a couple big games but eventually was reduced to a bench role. After a June with Princeton where he made some flashes at the Oak Hills shootout, Hardman decided to run with C2K for the July live periods. Hardman is still one of the best shooters in the state and has solid positional size. I think a second season with Head Coach Bryan Wyant could help get Hardman back on track to being one of the top prospects in the state.
Jared Frey Jared Frey 6'5" | SG ISA | 2022 State OH , 6’5 SG Hilliard Davidson 2022: Frey is a unique prospect because his role is very different for his high school and grassroots team. With Hilliard Davidson, Frey runs point guard next to sharpshooter Ryan Paris Ryan Paris 6'4" | SG Hilliard Davidson | 2022 State OH and forwards Peyton Frey Peyton Frey 6'5" | PF Hilliard Davidson | 2023 State OH and Jayden Nervis Jayden Nervis 6'6" | PF Hilliard Davidson | 2022 State OH . Frey brings the ball up the floor and gets the team into their sets in the half-court. With All Ohio Red, Frey is mostly relegated to a spot-up role in the corner. Frey doesn’t have the burst or moves to score from isolation situations in the EYBL, so this reduced role does make sense and will be closer to the role he’ll play in college. Frey was coming off the bench for Red, but did have a couple games where he did what he does best, which is knock down shots from deep. Playing in shoe circuit grassroots leagues will be the closest thing a prospect can get to college basketball during their prep careers, Frey will be more able to play a role in college after learning from this experience in the EYBL.
Michael Bova Michael Bova 6'2" | CG St. Edward | 2022 State OH , 6’2 CG Saint Edward 2022: Bova is the third All Ohio Red prospect we’ve covered in this article. Bova was another guy who came off the bench for Red but I felt like he made the most of his opportunities. Bova won’t blow you away with athleticism but he knows how to get to the rim and finish. He had a big take against Emoni Bates in the closing moments of a victory over Bates Fundamentals. Saint Edward was very inexperienced last season and Bova was a major reason why the Eagles stayed near the top of northeast Ohio. Bova was offered by Youngstown State in July of 2020, it will be interesting to see who else offers the Eagle guard.
