The Modesto Christian Classic was held this past weekend at Modesto Christian High School and other schools in the area. PH was at the main gym to see some of the top 2023 prospects in the class. NorCal has a good group in this class. Here are the one’s we thought played well at the main gym. There’s new faces we hadn’t seen before.

[player_tooltip player_id="950938" first="Derek" last="Sangster"] 6’6 W/F of Archbishop Mitty HS 2023

Sangster is one of the rising prospects in this class. He’ll take on a more important role for the Monarchs this season. He’s a long slender prospect with an improving skill set. He was effective in the post area because of his length and touch. His rebounding is improved, as well as his post defense. He’s shooting on the perimeter better. He's knocking down jumpers and 3’s at a good rate. He’ll have to bulk up a bit for the inside work.

[player_tooltip player_id="950789" first="Kodey" last="Weary"] 6’7 Forward of Edison HS 2023

Weary was impressive playing with his new teammates. He can establish himself as the go to guy in the paint the way he was scoring in the post area. He’s bulked up a bit and is more efficient hitting the jumper in the key. He’s starting to display his abilities on both ends of the court. A long armed defender with good mobility to guard multiple positions, his rebounding should pick up in a big way. He looks like a double-double guy. He can hit the 3 at times.

[player_tooltip player_id="950890" first="Courtney" last="Anderson"] 6’5 G/W of Dublin HS 2023

Anderson is expanding his game, and is starting to show an all-around skill set. With his size, and length, he’s taking it to the paint more aggressively, and finishing over defenders with dunks on occasion. He’s improved his passing and movement without the ball, not just relying on his jump shot. His defense is starting to show he’s capable of guarding multiple positions.

Prince Oseya 6’8 F/C of Modesto Christian HS 2023

A long slender improving post player right now who is gaining more and more attention as he improves his all- around skills. He’s a shot blocker in the paint, he runs the center of the court pretty well for a big, and he’s putting up 3’s at the top when the opportunity is there. Along with his size, and length he continues to improve his post play on both ends.

[player_tooltip player_id="1114843" first="Donovan" last="Cooks"] 6’0 PG of Dublin HS 2023

Cooks is showing steady improvement at the point guard position. Doing things that they do. He has good command, and patience facilitating the offense. He’s improving as a passer with vision. He’s getting the bigs to commit on the drive, then finding open teammates. He can create for himself, getting into the paint finishing through contact, or other ways.. He has a good mid-range shot, and will keep the defense honest with a 3ptr. He looks forward to guarding a scorer.

New Comers:

Leon Mills 6’2 CG of Edison HS 2023

It was our first look at Mills. He showed an ability to handle and create his own shot with a good first step, and handle the physical contact to finish on the drive. He has good foot speed, slashing and cutting without the ball. He did some good things on the wings, and in transition. Stop and go, change of direction, good body control to score from different angles. A solid combo guard, with good vision and passing skills to run a offense.

Mehki Thomas 6’5 G/W of Dublin HS 2023

It was our first look at Thomas. A fast moving athletic lefty who loves to attack with a burst going to his left. He’s hard to guard when he gets the step on you, he’ll convert. His handles are good in the open court, he’ll fill the lanes in transition looking to attack the rim aggressively. He has good length, and footspeed to guard multiple positions on the court. He recovers, rebounds some, and will get a few blocks. He brings good energy to the court. We’ll see more of him.

Henock Kabeya 6’3 PG of Modesto Christian HS 2023

We got another opportunity to see Kabeya. We really liked the way he handles himself on the court. He’s a strong body athlete with a good upside to his game. He showed a good all-around game, assuming point guard duties, showing patience and good command while directing the offense. He changes gears to show his ability work from the wings as well. His handles are good he excels in the open court with strong finishes around the rim. a good rebounding guard. We’ll see more of him.

Andrej Stojakovic 6’4 CG of Jesuit HS 2023

Stojakovic showed us a bit more play making skills with the basketball this time around. He’s a better ball handler and passer than we saw the first time he played. He’s has some quickness and he’s decisive. He has a good looking shot at mid-range and will hit open 3’s. He’s on the thins side but attacks well from the baseline, and in transition. He gets up the court pretty well with the ball.
