Unless you’re a Portland-area hoops insider, you probably hadn’t heard of the 6-foot-6, 170-pound junior at Roosevelt before this season. But it’s time you get to know the big-time talent who’s exploded onto the scene this year and you’ll be glad you did because big things are ahead for the guy who’s just starting to tap into his immense potential.
You’re probably asking yourself, how did I not know about a long, athletic 6-foot-6 Portland kid until 2021? Well it’s because last season as a sophomore, Seamster was playing JV basketball and measured all of 6-foot-2. Now he’s averaging over 20 points a game, throwing down multiple dunks every night and making his presence known. Just how did he get to this point in such a relatively short period of time?
“During quarantine, I grew a couple of inches and my coaches pushed me to be better every day,” Seamster said. “It’s been going good. I’m just doing what I’m supposed to do, what I planned on doing this year, coming in to get 6A Player of the Year.”
While it remains to be seen if Seamster gets that ultimate goal this season, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he was a major threat for that in 2021-22. When you see him play, you can tell he hasn’t even scratched the surface of the player he can be. Long, lean, and athletic with the type of frame to add more muscle and bulk, he is a threat to finish at the rim every time he’s around the basket. Given that he grew up as a guard, he has a solid handle and he selfishly passes the ball to the open man. And while he’s working on gaining consistency on his jumper, his form looks solid and his release is smooth.
As talented as Seamster is offensively, don’t forget about the other side of the ball. “I play defense too,” Seamster said. “I’m two-way in that I can play offense and I can play defense, one of the best players in the state. I’m just trying to get my weak hand better.”
Seamster certainly put together quite the highlight package against Forest Grove on Thursday night. Among his 21 points were a smattering of dunks – six of them in total – but he also knocked down a couple of jumpers including a three-pointer. Defensively he was active with both his hands on steals and his vertical blocking shots, and his motor was in high gear every minute he was on the court.
Because of his extremely rapid rise and everything related to the pandemic, Seamster has largely remained a secret among college basketball coaches. But word has slowly started to leak out of the St. John’s neighborhood and Seamster notes that he’s started to hear from the likes of Portland State, San Francisco, and Eastern Washington.
Obviously Seamster is feeling out the process but notes that he would like to major in Business and the University of Oregon is one of his favorite schools. He’s unquestionably a Division I recruit and you can count on more schools – perhaps from even high-major programs – start showing interest in him when he suits up with the Oregon Prospects in July.
The calls and offers will come, but for now Seamster remains focused on the rest of the year with Roosevelt. In fact, a big game looms next Monday as Roosevelt hopes to avenge their loss earlier in the season when they host Jefferson – and it’s certainly something on Seamster’s radar.
“We’re going to come out and play a full game this time and won’t let up,” Seamster said. “We’re not going to let their two star players get hot.”
Seamster is not currently ranked in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings but you can be assured he will be listed – and listed high – in the next update.
