The skilled 6-foot-4, 205-pound point guard will be leading the charge for the Demos and the standards will remain high. But after this year, the state’s #1 player in the Class of 2022 will be moving on. Washington recently announced that he’ll be attending Compass Prep in Arizona for his senior season and it’s a move that got its start when he started playing with the US Basketball Academy last year.
“We played them in the Grind Session and they’ve been talking to me ever since,” Washington said. “I just finally thought that it was a good decision for me especially with the Coronavirus going on and I wasn’t sure what was going on next year. They play a national schedule and that was big right there.”
Washington noted that Compass plans to use him specifically at the one and he’ll be surrounded by a number of talented teammates, including Jefferson buddy Marquis Cook Marquis Cook 6'6" | SF AZ Compass Prep | 2023 State #6 Nation AZ who also recently announced he’ll be attending the school as well. They’ll be living at a residence that houses the Compass players. Looking back, if not for playing on The Grind Session with USBA, he might not have received the opportunity – and capitalizing on it with his play.
“It was really good to get out there and get the exposure,” Washington said. “I was getting to the basket and facilitating for others a lot. With my finger injury I wasn’t shooting as many threes as usual so I was getting to the basket a lot more, facilitating for my teammates, and rebounding.”
Washington noted that he continues to work on his shooting, improving his bounce, and basically all parts of his game. College coaches have paid notice to all the hard work he’s put in not only with his game but with his body. His most recent hoops offers come from TCU and Oregon State (who has also offered for football) and he notes that schools such as Kansas, Oregon, Stanford, Houston, Baylor, Utah State, Loyola-Chicago, Boston College, and East Carolina have been in contact. Several have noted that they will be watching him play in July in AAU ball, of which he’ll be playing with Dream Vision.
“Right now things are really moving,” Washington said. “A couple of schools are saying they are pretty close (to offering) and they’re going to have their eyes on me.”
Washington is keeping everything open and isn’t ready to talk about any leaders. The same goes for the possibility of going the football route as the numerous options for him still exist there. He’s looking forward to his time down at Compass but first things first, there’s this last season in Portland at Jefferson – and he’s looking to go out with a bang.
“We’ve got to get it done and prove to everybody that if there was a state championship that we’d state champions,” Washington said.
Washington currently ranks as the #1 ranked player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings and #163 in the most recent PrepHoops National Class of 2022 rankings.
