Prep Hoops was in the gym at Piedmont Hills HS in San Jose on Tuesday night to see the Pirates 7-4 take on Halfmoon Bay 14-2. Both are top teams in their respective leagues. Halfmoon Bay has put together a good team and is playing a exciting brand of basketball. HMB led from wire to wire, keeping the Pirates at bay with leads as large as 14pts. In the end it was too much fire power from HMB, the Pirates could only close the gap to 10pts. Final score 71-61 HMB. Here’s our top players in the game.

[player_tooltip player_id="1114340" first="Mykola" last="Ediger"] 6’3 PG/CG/F Halfmoon Bay HS 2021 Unsigned Senior

Ediger is the engine that makes this team go. He’s a versatile player that can impact the game in different ways. He has the ball is in his hands most of the time. He’s a smart player that makes good decisions with the ball. His vision, and passing skills were on display in this game. His teammates have grown accustomed to him finding them if the continue to move, and cut without the ball. He had a good night on the boards hauling in 10rebs, 6assts, 2stls, and 9pts.

[player_tooltip player_id="946533" first="Alijah" last="Washington"] 6’3 CG/SF of Piedmont Hills HS 2021 Unsigned Senior

Washington showed off his versatility as well being the primary ball handler for the Pirates. In past seasons he would spot up hoping to receive a pass, not now. He’s a quality ball handler who made a deliberate effort to involve teammates with his handling, and passing. He has the strength and size to get into the paint for jumpers, when he moves off ball, he can deliver the deep 3, he had three in this game to finish with 23pts.

Ben McKnight 6’4 W/SF of HMB HS 2021 Unsigned Senior

McKnight had a good game, he slashed, cut across the middle regularly ending up with passes from Ediger for buckets. He has good size and is aggressive rolling to the basket. He surprised us with a coast to coast for a bucket. He chipped in to the grab 5rebs, but his biggest contribution was receiving the pass from Ediger and knocking down open shots from 3. He had four 3ptrs and 22pts on the night.

Lucas Meighen 6’1 Guard of HMB HS 2021 Unsigned Senior

Meighen is one of those players that knows he’s going to get a pass from Ediger if he keeps running the court. He filled lanes in transition, cut to the basket in half court and was rewarded with passes that turned into points. He can hit the corner 3. His hustle on defense, and getting his hands on several passes resulted in him passing up to teammates for layups. Two 3ptrs, 10pts. 3rebs, 2stls.

Jordan Martinez 5’6 SG of Piedmont Hills HS, 2021 Unsigned Senior

A lot of the success of the Pirates depends on the shooting of Martinez. If he’s making 3’s that open things up for other players to work in their space. He’s kind of streaky right now, but he can get hot in a hurry. A couple of back to backs 3’s put the Pirates back in the game. He finished with a team high, game high 24pts. five 3ptrs.

Richard Corona 6’2 F/C of Piedmont Hills HS, Unsigned Senior.

As the tallest player on the team he’s tasked with defending the other teams post player. He’s a tough defender who works hard inside. He’ll box out, and rebound for his team. He sets good screens, and passes well to cutters and shooters. 8pts 4rebs.
