There was tons of talent from all over the DMV and Virginia, and had some very high level matchups and players from all age groups. We take a look at part five of the standouts, with a look at some of the top 16U performers from the event.
All of the games can be seen on the CBG Live Network here.
Trevor Smith Trevor Smith 5'11" | PG Woodside | 2023 State #267 Nation VA | 5’11” PG | Team Loaded VA 16U
Smith was the catalyst for Loaded’s 16U group this past weekend as he set the tone on both ends of the floor and was very aggressive to make plays for himself and others. He’s a very good on ball defender with good lateral quickness and he thrives in transition with his end-to-end speed and ability to get to the rim and make plays for others. He looks to be improving as a shooter from deep as well as it was the best I had seen him shoot the basketball, and if he continues to be consistent in that area he’ll continue to see his recruitment take off.
Carter Lang Carter Lang 6'9" | C St. Anne's Belfield | 2023 State #199 Nation VA | 6’10” C | Team Loaded VA 16U
Lang is one of the most impressive big man prospects in the 2023 class that I’ve seen, and he continues to round out his game and be very productive on both ends. He isn’t the most athletic guy but he plays with a great motor, he has good touch out to the three-point line and he shows good toughness in the paint as he rebounds extremely well on both ends of the floor. They don’t always go to him as much as they should, but that doesn’t stop him from playing hard and making an impact in multiple different aspects of the game.
Luke McEldon | 6’8” C | Team Loaded VA 16U
McEldon is another intriguing big in the Loaded organization that is reclassifying to the 2023 class and with another year could see his recruitment really take off. The 6’8” big is a technician in the post, as he has good feet and can score over either shoulder and he has good power allowing him to play through contact and hit the glass hard. He still has tons of room to develop moving forward but he’s already a workhorse and a load in the paint that is hard to guard one-on-one on the block.
Doyle Brown | 6’0” CG | District Basketball Club 16U
Coming off of a state championship with a lot of upperclassmen, Brown is looking like he’ll be the next guy at Centreville and is off to a very good start for DBC this spring. Brown is a quick twitch athlete that can guard on the perimeter very well, and he’s a skilled shot maker that is consistent from deep and can attack closeouts and get in the lane. He showed good toughness on both ends, and will likely have a breakout year at Centreville next season.
Gibralter Coleman | 6’6” PF | District Basketball Club White 16U
Coleman and the DBC White group were very good in the game I watched them, as he’s a talented scoring big that can play inside-out and is a walking mismatch. He’s grown to a legit 6’6”, he’s strong in the paint and can score on the block and he’s a guy who can stretch the floor and make shots from deep as well. He plays with a good motor and has a good IQ, and he is able to impact the game in a lot of different ways on both ends of the floor.
KJ Gardner KJ Gardner 6'2" | SG Springdale Prep | 2023 State MD | 6’0” PG | District Basketball Club White 16U
Gardner is an athletic guard who can thrives in transition and plays with a toughness you just can’t teach. He’s an all-out kind of guy who comes at you time and time again, doesn’t take any plays off and when he gets downhill he’s a big time finisher at the rim. He has a good skill set that includes a good handle and he’s a lock down defender on the basketball as well.
Chali Taylor | 6’4” PF | Trailblazers Elite 16U
Taylor isn’t the biggest or the most athletic guy at his position but he was very productive and one of the top scorers in the 16U division. He’s a mismatch with his mix of strength, athleticism and skill set, and he really plays with a good motor and has a knack for being around the ball and in positions to succeed. He has good fundamentals and plays hard on both ends, and is just all-around productive in a number of ways.
