TAKEAWAYS:
-These are two of the best teams in Class 2A. I think Union, Hooker, and a healthy Minco team are all in the conversation as well, but these two teams are starting to separate themselves.
-Dale suffered big time when Dale Forsythe fouled out. Even if it wasn’t his best shooting night, it was clear that he was a key piece to what the Pirates try to do on offense and defense. He is their energy guy, and ball handler, which made it tough for Dale not having him late.
-Cashion has a trio of guys that can score the ball at will. Jonah Jenkins, Vance Raney, and Austin Frazier are all guys that could go for 20+ on any given night. They feed off of each other well too and continue to find the hot hand.
-Last night’s hot hand was Vance Raney. He went 6-9 from three point range and finished the game with 22 points. Vance continued to get open by off ball movement, including coming off screens and screening others which eventually freed him up. He’s able to get his shot off in a hurry.
-Dayton Forsythe is already one of the best players in the class. He was quiet in the third quarter, but when his team got down late, he knew he had to step up. He showed his ability to take over games, as he scored 19 points in the fourth quarter and overtime periods. Forsythe has a good looking shot and is a big bodied guard that forces his way into the paint and scores at will.
-Cashion’s zone slowed down the Pirates big time in the second half. It took away driving lanes and ultimately helped the Wildcats go on their huge run that eventually won them the game.
STAND OUTS:
Vance Raney: The Cashion junior can flat out shoot the ball. He hit some contested floaters too. When Raney is hot, he’s one of the top shooters in the state. Great night from him.
Dallen Forsythe: While he didn’t score as much, Forsythe was incredibly active. He is the leader of this Dale team and is also a fantastic defender.
Jonah Jenkins: Jenkins is a pure point guard. His best asset is his ability to create for others. He is a great ball handler and uses that, plus his speed, to get to the lane and find the open man.
Dayton Forsythe: Forsythe, only a freshman, was one of the best players on the court last night. He can score at every level and is big enough to rebound at a high clip. His stock is only going to rise.
Austin Frazier: Frazier had two incredible finishes around the rim. He’s a smooth player and hard to stop when he’s in the paint. He’s also a great shooter too, as he spotted up in the corner a few times last night.
Kash Vanbrunt: Vanbrunt is a new name here, but he can flat out shoot the ball. He has good size and length and isn’t afraid to let it fly. He nailed three big threes for Dale last night, two of them with defenders in his face. Vanbrunt really impressed me.
Last night was a great game and a picture of what’s to come in March. 2A has some great teams at the top and there will be plenty of competition and fantastic games like the one we saw last night. I’ll be in action again tonight, live from a top 3A battle between Community Christian and Millwood.
