Continue ReadingSunday marked the second session of the CBG Winter Series, a club team event that was started by the Commonwealth Basketball Group to give kids and teams that don’t have a chance to play high school ball this year a chance to compete in front of a live stream for college coaches and other media. The event featured 12 teams from across the state of VA, and each team played two games with 20 minute running clock halves.
There was tons of talent in the building with some teams returning from session one and some new ones as well. We will take a look at the standouts and need to break them up due to the amount of talent in the building.
We continue by taking a look at six underclassmen that stood out at the second session of the CBG Winter Series!
Anyone wishing to watch the replays of the game can check it out on the CBG Live Network at https://cbglivenetwork.com.
Steven Stinson Steven Stinson 6'5" | SF John Marshall | 2023 State VA | 6’4” SF | CBG Select 2023
Stinson joined an already talented CBG Select group and brought a gritty and tough style along with a solid skill set at his size for good production. He’s a very strong player for his age and plays with a great motor as a slasher and rebounder, and he makes good decisions and plays the game the right way when he’s on the floor. He brings it on both ends, he’s a good athlete and is a guy who should continue to get better as he polishes his skill set.
Carter Lang Carter Lang 6'9" | C St. Anne's Belfield | 2023 State #199 Nation VA | 6’9” C | CBG 434 2023
Lang was one of the most productive guys in the CBG Fall Series and returned for the Winter Series to much of the same before he turned his ankle in the second game. The walking double-double showed his high motor, his soft touch out to three-point line and his ability to finish over guys in the paint and dominate the glass on both ends. He finished the day averaging a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds, including a 17 point, 13 rebound, 6 block game in their win over VA Academy.
John St. Germain John St. Germain 6'2" | PG St. Anne's Belfield | 2023 State VA | 6’0” PG | CBG 434 2023
Another very talented sophomore for CBG 434, St. Germain is one of the top floor generals in the state regardless of class, and he ran his team with poise and was a consummate leader throughout the day. The 6’0” guard showed his ability to handle pressure and get his team into their sets and make others better, he showed he can create and make shots from multiple levels and he has a terrific feel for the game on both ends and makes everything seem so easy when he’s on the floor. He finished the day averaging 12.5 points and 5 assists per game.
Jah Dickerson | 6’2” G | Blue Magic 2024
Dickerson got some big minutes as Blue Magic was missing some of their top players due to injury, and he took advantage as he showed flashes of big potential moving forward. He’s a guard who already has good size and strength at a young age, and he plays with good poise and understanding of the game at his age. He shoots it well from deep, can play on and off the basketball and should have plenty of room to get better moving forward.
Kenard Wyche Jr. | 5’5” PG | CBG East 2024
Wyche is a very important part of a CBG East team that is full of size and depth on the wing and he brings another ball handler and playmaker to their group. He’s already looking like one of the best guards in the Richmond area, and he comes from good blood as his father is a Richmond legend and was an absolute hooper in his own right. He’s poised well beyond his years and is highly skilled as a ball handler and shot maker, and he’s a pesky defender who will pressure the ball and get in the face of even the best of the best guards that are older than him.
Chance Mallory | 5’2” G | CBG 434 2024
CBG 434 has quite a few of the top players in the 2022 and 2023 class in VA, and while Mallory isn’t the biggest player or name on this team he provides consistent shot making and plays with great confidence already. As an eighth grader last year he played big minutes and you could see him getting more and more confident throughout the year, and every time you watch him you see him getting better. Despite his size he understands the game very well and is a top notch shooter and you always think it’s going in when he lets it go, and he averaged 10.5 points while shooting 50% from deep in the two games.
