However in such a hot bed of talent, more players are making a name for themselves. Prep Hoops takes a look at the top performers through 3 weeks at the Hoops 2.0 SoCal Showcase.
RJ Smith RJ Smith 6'4" | CG Damien | 2022 State CA-S (Wing, 2022, Damien/Prodigy) The most consistent player in Hoops 2.0 So Cal Showcase through 3 weeks of play is RJ Smith RJ Smith 6'4" | CG Damien | 2022 State CA-S . The wing is putting up 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists a game in the travel team league so far. Smith has all the tools to be a D1 player. He can shoot the 3, has a nice mid range game, and knows how to slither his way to the bucket. The Damien junior shows his high IQ as he also gets a good bulk of his buckets off of the correct back door cuts and on rolls to the rim. Smith might be one of the most efficient players in SoCal. Playing under former pros Tracy and Cameron Murray has helped develop RJ into a rising player to look out for.
Dennis Evans Dennis Evans 6'10" | C Riverside Hillcrest | 2023 CA-S (2023, Hillcrest/Team Inland) The 7 footer is a can’t miss prospect out of California. The Team Inland big man is putting up 3.5 blocks and 7.5 rebounds per game so far in Hoops 2.0. His length and wingspan is unmatched as he will swat anything coming his way. On offense he does a great job going after misses and putting back missed shots. Evans is an improving player who is putting it all together. He has all the potential and all the tools to be a big time D1 prospect as he is young and still has room to get better.
Anthony Hunter (G, 2021, Middlebrooks Academy) The former Durango guard from Las Vegas finds himself now at Middlebrooks Academy. Hunter is a high motor tough point guard who is always bringing the hustle on the floor. Standing at 6’0, he does a great job of going after rebounds and loose balls and turning them into opportunities for his teammates. His energy is contagious and leads to plenty of opportunities for teammates. On offense, Hunter also does a great job of slashing to the rim finishing with acrobatic scoops and layups. His motor, unselfishness, and defense is what sets him apart from other prospects. Hunter is getting interest from D1 programs and has potential to be a contributor at the next level.
Chris Dockery Chris Dockery 6'5" | SF Bonanza | 2021 CA-S (F, 2021, Middlebrooks Academy) Athleticism and downhill ability are two of the first things you see when you lay eyes upon Dockery. The 6’6 wing does a great job of using his speed and athleticism to get to the rim almost at will. Dockery has good footwork, and has a couple of hesitation dribble moves to free himself and create space. He also possesses a quick first step which allows him to use his long strides in getting to the basket. He also has the range and consistently hits the three. Dockery is a definite Division I prospect and should garner even more interest now that he is playing in Southern California.
Devean Williams (G, 2021, Narbonne/Fastbreak) Perhaps the person making the biggest name for himself and rising up the carts is Devean Williams. The shifty, left handed guard has shown that he can score at all 3 levels. Behind the arc Williams is more than capable of using jabs and dribbles to get himself open for the three ball which he shoots with good accuracy off the dribble. He also can use his tight handles to get into the lane and hop scotch through the paint. Williams looks to be a natural scorer and had an excellent showing including a 24 point game against Prodigy. He might be coming on late to the scene but colleges need to keep an eye on the unsigned senior out of Los Angeles as he could very well end up being a huge steal.
