Continue ReadingIt was a star studded match up Saturday afternoon with two of the top teams in the Houston area facing off. Summer Creek HS (#7 in RCS Sports weekly team rankings) hosted Elkins HS (#8 in RCS Sports weekly team rankings) in a game that included a number of top ranked prospects in the classes of 2023, 2022 and 2021. We caught up with two of the prospects heading into the game to see how they were feeling prior to the tip. Jaleen Goodman (PG | Summer Creek HS | 2022) told us that he was “feeling good…just ready to go to war with my dudes!!!” On the other side Shane Bell (G | Elkins HS | 2021) told us “I am feeling confident in my team’s ability to win against any team. We’ve worked hard all off season and we expect each other to compete every time we step on the on the floor. Playing hard is something you can’t teach, and we play hard.” So the table was set. Two teams filled with a ton of talent, who all play hard, opening the season against one another in, what most consider, the game of the week. Here’s the game recap.
First Quarter
The Summer Creek Bulldogs got out to a fast start thanks to Reece Allen making two quick buckets. But Shane Bell and the Elkins Knights countered that by going on an 8-0 run. At this point, the staple of all Summer Creek teams, began to be successful. That, being their full court defense, sped up the Knights and forced them to take rushed shots and turn the ball over. And Summer Creek was able to capitalize on it by jumping out to a healthy lead. However, Jaleen Goodman appeared to suffer from a minor injury that he sustained after driving to the cup late in the quarter. Still, Summer Creek held a 1st quarter lead at the end of the period led by Cameron Patterson (2024) who scored 8.
End of Quarter Score
Summer Creek – 23
Elkins – 14
Second Quarter
The story of the second quarter was the Elkins defense. They forced difficult shots and that led to plays in transition for them. Summer Creek could never get their offense together, scoring only 11 points in the period. Joshua Fanuiel, in the second quarter, sparked the Knights open court game as he and Shane Bell took full advantage of the good looks they were getting by running the floor. This duo accounted for 18 of the Knights 26 points in the period, turning the tables and giving Elkins a nice lead heading into the half.
End of Quarter Score
Summer Creek – 34
Elkins – 40
Third Quarter
Aside from some timely three pointers from Jaylon Johnson, Shane Bell and Joshua Fanuiel, the third quarter was a test of wills and not much scoring. Emotions began to run high as both teams tried to gain a mental edge over one another. Credit to the refs for allowing the players to keep their passion and emotion without letting the game get out of hand, and without penalizing either team. Needless to say, this quarter was alot more physical which played into the hands of Reyce Allen who scored 6 (grown man) points in the paint for Summer Creek. However, Elkins still hung onto a 6 point lead.
End of Quarter Score
Summer Creek – 48
Elkins – 54
Forth Quarter
Amaree Abram Amaree Abram 6'4" | PG Southern California Academy | 2022 s came alive in the fourth quarter for Summer Creek and showed why he is a highly touted prospect. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, so did Chris Johnson Chris Johnson 6'6" | CG Montverde Academy | 2023 State #27 Nation FL for Elkins. Both teams traded blows and Summer Creek ramped their defense back up and caused Elkins to start turning the ball over again. So with four minutes left in the game, Summer Creek was only down 3 with all of the momentum. However, after a timeout, Jacolbi Harris Jacolbi Harris 6'3" | PG Fort Bend Elkins | 2020 TX (2021 PG) got a steal and threw the ball to a streaking Chris Johnson Chris Johnson 6'6" | CG Montverde Academy | 2023 State #27 Nation FL for the only dunk of the game. With that play Elkins was able to capture the momentum and never looked back, finishing the game with a 7 point win.
Final Score
Summer Creek – 69
