Continue ReadingA fourth-quarter comeback fueled the Lockhart Lions (2-2) 57-53 win over the Weiss Wolves (1-3) in Monday’s non-conference matchup, with the Lions scoring 24 points in the final quarter and four players scoring in the double figures for the game. It was a back-and-forth competition for most of the game, but Lockhart’s frontcourt was the difference maker as they came up huge in the fourth quarter to ultimately seal the victory.
Here are the top performers from the Lockhart vs Weiss game:
Jah Gulley | 5-11 PG | Lockhart (2022)
The Lions junior point guard was the leading scorer of the game with 21 points and showed to be an electric playmaker who was explosive going to the basket. Gulley did a great job blowing by defenders getting into the paint and around the hoop, where he had some impressive finishes and drew a fair amount of fouls. Gulley was also clutch from the free-throw line, making 11-of-12 from the charity stripe.
Tyson Whybrew Tyson Whybrew 6'5" | SF Weiss | 2022 State TX | 6-5 SF | Weiss (2022)
Whybrew’s play was a bright spot in what was a rough game for the Wolves, where the physical forward posted an impressive stat line of 19 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks, 4 assists, and 1 steal. Whybrew showed his versatility by playing inside and battling against Lockhart’s posts that had nearly half a foot of height on him. His two best plays of the game came from his physical play in the paint where he brought down two offensive rebounds and finished strong through contact for and-one, put-back layups.
Tyler Stephenson | 6-11 C | Lockhart (2021)
Stephenson’s height and length are a problem for opponents and the senior center had an impactful game in the paint with 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Stephenson did a good job roaming the paint on defense, making it difficult for Weiss to put up shots near the basket. Stephenson set the tone early in the game with 6 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 block in the first quarter of play.
Giovani Roque | 6-4 PF | Lockhart (2021)
Roque was a standout player in the fourth quarter for the Lions, contributing 8 points and 5 rebounds in the final frame. The senior forward has a strong build and did a good job of using his size and physicality on the block, but he even showed his shooting range stepping out and hitting a three-pointer in the second quarter. Roque finished the game with 11 points and 9 rebounds.
Major New | 6-10 C | Lockhart (2022)
Lockhart had the luxury of bringing a 6’10” junior post off the bench and New gave them a spark with 10 points and 9 rebounds performance. New showed to be a strong rebounder, ran the floor well, and had a soft touch around the basket where he hit four shots and drew two and-one plays.
