I was lucky enough to work this great event and coach which ever team came to us on court 3. With that in mind here is the seven top underclassman that I saw on that court during the day.
Jamison Eklund Jamison Eklund 6'5" | PF Pewamo-Westphalia | 2023 State MI 6’5 Pewamo-Westphalia 2023-Jamison had a great AAU summer season with The Prospectors, and it was more of the same for him at this event. He just is a smart basketball player who knows how to play the game the right way. He may not dunk over anyone, or shoot 30-foot threes, but he makes winning plays, because that is what he is. A winner. He is a good shooter and can handle the ball and score inside at his size and I still think he is only going to get better.
Triston Nichols Triston Nichols 6'2" | SF De La Salle | 2023 State MI 6’3 Warren De Le Salle 2023-Triston is just so strong and athletic you forget he still has three varsity seasons of high school basketball left. He spent almost all his summer playing up two divisions in AAU with the U17 guys and that will only help him. He is going to be a major problem for opponents for years to come.
Jordan Briggs Jordan Briggs 6'0" | PG Muskegon | 2023 State MI 5’11 and Anthony Sydnor III 6’0 Muskegon 2023-Yeah so, I cheated to add more than seven players I talk about, but I had to keep the best back court of 2023 together. Jordan does a great job of scoring when he needs to and just running the show when his team needs him to do that. He can score there is no question about that, but his ability to defer makes him a great point guard. Sydnor can handle and pass the ball too, no question about that, but he also can play off the ball and shoot well from the outside or attack the basket. Coach Guy has got himself some more great guard play in Big Red country.
Daniel Smythe 6’1 Orchard Lake St Mary’s 2024- “Bugsy” just have a really good feel for the game and definitely does not play like a freshman. Long arms too which helps him on the defensive end, and he can facilitate or score on offense. Really look forward to seeing how his game develops over the next four years, because he already is pretty darn good.
Charlie Deutsch Charlie Deutsch 6'4" | SG Rockford | 2023 State MI 6’3 Rockford 2023-Charlie is a typical Rockford kid in the fact that he plays hard all the time, has a good build to him and can shoot the ball. He is skilled with the ball in his hands and has the versatility to play inside or out on both ends of the floor. He can rebound and start the break himself and make good decisions with the ball.
Drew Caswell 5’10 East Grand Rapids 2023-Drew is a smart solid lead guard who does a great job controlling the flow of the game and running the show while still being able to take the ball to the basket and score in the lane, or knock down the outside shoot. He was a guy that just played too well when I saw him to keep him off this list.
Carter Diedrich 6’7 Ida 2023-Very interested to watch Carter play over the next three years as well. He is awfully long and runs the floor great for a young player of his height. When he gets the ball, he can finish well with either hand or show a nice touch on his jump shot weather you want to play a bigger or smaller defender on him.
