Group 2 was one of the top sections in the Garden State this season as it contained two of the state’s top five teams. Camden and Manasquan combined to win 60 games last season, while Ramsey made the Bergen County Jamboree semifinals. The section is filled with many players who have the ability to make an impact at the next level. Here are the top under the radar guards from Group 2.

[player_tooltip player_id="1012952" first="Devin" last="Benson"], 6’0 CG Camden 2021

The Panthers are one of the most loaded teams in New Jersey, so it’s easy for players like Benson to slip between the cracks. The 6’0 lefty is a sniper from behind the arc and does not need a lot of space to get his shot off. Benson is more than just a shooter as he can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim. He is a tough on-ball defender and an underrated passer. Camden should be one of the teams to beat again in New Jersey with Benson providing a solid role off the bench.

Brian Herbert, 6’3 SG Robbinsville 2022

The Ravens had a strong 2019-20 season and they have the ability to build on that with Herbert getting an expanded role in the offense. The 6’3 guard is a good shooter who wastes little motion in his shot. Herbert sets his feet before he shoots the ball and can knock down triples in bunches. He moves his feet well on the defensive end and does not panic when he gets pressured. Herbert had a strong summer with Jersey Force Elite 16U, which should contribute to a good junior campaign.

[player_tooltip player_id="900368" first="Nick" last="Peltekian"], 6’0 PG Mahwah 2021

Peltekian is a standout athlete with the opportunity to two sports at the next level. The gridiron star attacks the basket with a purpose and is unafraid of drawing contact around the basket. Peltekian loves to push the pace in transition and is athletic enough to finish above the rim. He is unafraid of taking the big shot in crunch time and is a solid passer. Peltekian is a talented athlete who should have a strong final varsity season for Mahwah.

[player_tooltip player_id="901971" first="Asim" last="Jones"], 5’10 PG Manchester Regional 2022

Jones has been a rock for the Hawks over the past two years and should be again in 2020-21. The 5’10 guard is lightning quick with the ball in his hands and is hard to keep out of the lane. Jones is more than just a slasher as he has the ability to knock down perimeter jumpers. He makes plays on the defensive end and knows how to run the offense. Jones is a skilled lead guard prospect who should help Manchester Regional have a solid season.

[player_tooltip player_id="1017195" first="Archie" last="Lawler"], 6’2 SG Lower Cape May 2023

The Tigers may have had an early exit during the sectional playoffs, but they have the potential to make a run with Lawler returning. The 6’2 guard has a good release on his shot and shoots the ball with confidence from deep. Lawler can also finish around the basket and put the ball on the floor. He is a good rebounder for a guard and works hard on the defensive end. Lawler is a potential breakout candidate as he gets more touches for Lower Cape May.

Other Players to Watch:

Matt Lee, 6’2 PG Point Pleasant Boro 2022

[player_tooltip player_id="1013003" first="Kyree" last="Tinsley"], 5’9 PG Cedar Creek 2021

[player_tooltip player_id="1017707" first="Jaxon" last="Baker"], 6’1 CG Barnegat 2021

[player_tooltip player_id="850545" first="Tasheem" last="Anderson"], 6’2 CG Newark Central 2021

[player_tooltip player_id="1018567" first="Wayne" last="Franklin"], 6’2 CG Wayne Hills 2022

[player_tooltip player_id="900348" first="Jamling" last="Lama"], 6’0 PG Secaucus 2021
