This event showed just how deep this class is in this area, with many of these kids showing up for the first time this summer even though this was the second time the Proving Ground was solely based on the class of 2022. In the building this past Sunday were some pretty elite shooters, and these shooters came in all sizes. The best shooters this past Sunday showed that they could hit shots from mid-range, deep and be able to knock down the ever-important free throw.
Drew Panning Drew Panning 6'8" | C Hilliard Darby | 2022 State OH – Westland: This young man’s early mission was simple; space out, find a corner, get his feet set and knock down the jumper. He did this at a high rate, hitting nothing but the bottom of the net which helped him set up his pump fake, one-dribble, mid-range jumper. His length made him a match-up problem for defenders as he began to shoot over the top of them. Panning has a high arch for a guard, even as a bigger guard, this bodes well for him in the future as he goes to the next level against more athletic players and even may switch positions.
Corey Hudson- Pickerington North: The MVP of the day did not take many perimeter jump shots but when he did, they were important and they dropped. Hudson was calm and collected during the afternoon, processing each game and knowing when and where to take his shots at. Once he loosened up the defense, the MVP began to get into the lane and hit elbow jumpers along with 17-foot jumpers. Hudson’s IQ was on display as he got to where he wanted on the court and got into advantageous positions to get off the ground and not get his shot blocked. In a loaded Pickerington North backcourt, Hudson has the chance to be a key contributor.
Noah Lawrence Noah Lawrence 6'0" | PG Westerville North | 2022 State OH – Westerville North: Didn’t get many chances, but he made the chances count with a couple of deep three’s that helped put his team in favorable positions to get the victories that they got. Lawrence continuously spaced the floor well and got open enough for catch and shoot jumpers. This young man showed a lightning quick release and a fairly high arch on his shot, proving that this was not a one Sunday trend and he is actually a good shooter. Lawrence will fit in at a Westerville North program that has constantly developed good, under-the-radar type of players.
Daviyon McDonald- Dublin Coffman: On a tough Sunday for his team, the 6-foot-7 stretch was one of the shining lights. McDonald was pure money from beyond the arc, displaying amazing catch-and-shoot abilities. McDonald’s catch-and-shoot skills became more impressive because he can do it both in the half-court off screen and he can do it from the fast break after grabbing the rebound. With more playing time this season, McDonald can take a huge step forward in the eyes of recruits and become a big-time prospect for smaller schools.
