Continue ReadingWinter is approaching and while there is still uncertainty for the high school season, some leagues around the DMV are formulating plans for start dates. With that being the case, it’s the most opportune time to begin previewing players who should experience breakout seasons in 2020-21. The first group will be the 2022 guards.
Devin Dinkins Devin Dinkins 5'10" | PG Gonzaga | 2022 State MD | Gonzaga
Dinkins took over the reigns of the offense for head coach Steve Turner as a sophomore and took tremendous strides throughout the season. The 5-foot-9 floor general is a fearless competitor with an elite outside shooting presence.
Christian Winborne Christian Winborne 6'2" | CG Gilman | 2022 State #199 Nation MD | Gilman
If Winborne’s performance throughout the summer and this fall is a sign for what the future holds, high-major programs better get with the program. The 6-foot-2 lead guard can log crooked scoring numbers and can do so from anywhere on the floor. Winborne plays with an edge that any team’s lead guard needs and does all the little things to will his team to victory.
Judah Mintz | Gonzaga
Mintz was utilized as a sixth man early in the 2019-20 season before being inserted into the starting lineup where he eventually established himself as a consistent scoring presence. The 6-foot-3 combo guard lives in the paint and can finish with regularity around the rim through contact. Mintz also became a three-point marksman as the season progressed and gives Coach Turner another stout defender in the backcourt alongside Dinkins.
Tyson Commander Tyson Commander 6'4" | SG The John Carroll School | 2022 State #203 Nation MD | John Carroll
Commander is coming off a productive sophomore campaign and is already approaching the 1000-point mark. I’m confident in saying you won’t many other shooters on the East Coast who can stroke it quite like Commander. His athleticism has also improved significantly and should make him a threat to finish over the rim in traffic on drives.
Bryce Lindsay Bryce Lindsay 6'2" | CG St. Frances | 2022 State MD | Poly
Lindsay is on the verge of a major breakout both on the floor and with his recruitment. He’s right alongside Commander as a top shooter on the coast, but where he has proven himself this summer is with his facilitating skills. The 6-foot-3 point guard has criminally underrated vision with the ball and a tight handle that allows him to get into the heart of the defense and create for others.
Trey Thomas Trey Thomas 6'3" | PG Wise | 2022 MD | Wise
Thomas will be the engine once again for Wise this season. The 6-foot-3 guard is a dynamic scorer who can generate points for himself or others in a variety of ways. He has great size, quick-twitch abilities and a strong frame that allows him to finish through contact.
Deon Perry Deon Perry 5'8" | PG Mt. Carmel | 2022 State MD | Mt. Carmel
Perry was the straw that stirred the drink for the Cougars last season. If usage rate was compiled in the Baltimore area, I would guess that Perry would’ve been somewhere in the top three of that list. At 5-foot-9, Perry is a shifty guard who prefers operating in ball screens where he can launch three’s with accuracy, use his shifty array of moves to get to the rim or showcase his vision as a passer to teammates spotting up on the perimeter.
Rob Lawson Rob Lawson 5'9" | PG National Christian | 2022 State MD | Archbishop Carroll
Lawson logged a productive summer for Team Durant and I expect him to translate it into his play this winter with Carroll. The 5-foot-9 is as quick as they come and athletic enough to finish above the rim in the open floor. Lawson can break down his match-up off the bounce and create open shots for himself on a routine basis. He also understands how to get his teammates in spots to be successful.
