September 12-13 I attended the All-Academic Basketball Super Bowl. This group goes into many cities in the US and came through to Phoenix at the Phhacility. Over 200 players were participating in this event with, according to the director, there were 188 coaches tuning in and watching online over the weekend.

Here were some of the Tucson standouts that I don’t get to see often:

2021

[player_tooltip player_id="809693" first="Zachariah" last="Morgan"] Pueblo

-A long high upside big. He has decent skill level to shoot it from the 3pt line and can work inside the paint as well. He fractured his ankle early in summer and his foot was still clearly bothering plus his stamina wasn’t there yet. He went in spurts but he gets his hands on everything near the basket from rebounding and blocking shots on defense to moving players on offense deep inside to score it.

[player_tooltip player_id="1049897" first="Kevin" last="Potter"] Sahuaro

-Very patient ball handler who makes good reads to his teammates and scored 10+ points in each game. One of the those players who just knows how to play. He does a little bit of everything. He is a fairly conservative player but is always trying to make the correct play with nice court vision.

2022

[player_tooltip player_id="1049921" first="Ryan" last="Tertel"] Pusch Ridge (Pictured)

-A combo guard shooter is definitely under the radar in Tucson. He is a very good passer and is crafty to score the ball. He can pull-up from mid-range and hits the 3 with good consistency. He is deceptively fast and can get to spots on the floor he wants. He also finishes off layups surprisingly well with his left hand.

[player_tooltip player_id="1049922" first="Jake" last="Smith"] Buena

-A two-guard with a great feel for the game. He plays a smart floor game and he can shoot it. Another under the radar player was my first time viewing him and I came away impressed. He has beautiful ball rotation and is a confident player. He plays with a high IQ and seems to always be in the right spot on both ends of the court.

[player_tooltip player_id="827026" first="Marcus" last="Coleman"] Pueblo

-A well put together guard can score it and facilitate. He has a big motor to compete on defense and he uses his strength to get downhill. He has a nice floater game plus he can hit from mid-range. He is best when he attacks the basket and plays with incredible energy.

[player_tooltip player_id="827047" first="Dillan" last="Baker"] Salpointe Catholic

-A skilled face-up 4-man loves the mid-range game. He can put the ball on the floor and drive to the basket to score it. He rebounds well in his area and plays a cerebral type of game. He is moving more fluidly than when I first saw him.
