The gist of the program was this: I offered to review a prospect’s full game film and provide a detailed scouting report on that player’s strengths and weaknesses, along with some workout tools developed by a friend and trainer.
The idea quickly took off and as my email inbox filled with submissions from across the country, I thought it would be great to highlight some of those players on the Prep Hoops platform, as well. So, here are a handful of 2021 prospects I reviewed over the last few months.
Tyler Darrett, Jurupa Hills – Darrett has smooth shooting mechanics, has deep range and hits consistently from multiple spots behind the arc. While he can fill it up from the perimeter in a hurry, the 6-foot shooting guard thrives on the defensive end with his willingness to pick up 94-feet and turn a ball-handler multiple times before reaching half court. Darrett gets under the skin of offensive players and speeds up his assignment into committing turnovers.
DJ Ralston, San Diego – Ralston is a crafty combo guard who has the ball skills and playmaking abilities to serve as a primary ball handler, but can also play off of it with his three-point shooting touch. Ralston is especially effective with the corner three-ball and slashing his way to the basket in transition. The 6-foot-1 rising senior does a nice job of getting downhill and staying on balance in transition. While he lacks strength in his frame, he’s a crafty finisher around the basket.
Caleb Nelson Caleb Nelson 6'7" | SF Carlsbad | 2021 State CA-S , Carlsbad – Nelson is a versatile prospect on both sides of the floor. Offensively, the 6-foot-5 forward has the strength and physicality to absorb and finish through contact, but can also step out and knock down the face-up three-point shot with consistency, Defensively, Nelson has shown the ability to hold his own as a positional post defender, while also being able to switch out and contain ball handlers in screen roll action.
