It’s many layers to the wing position and the players that occupy this area on the floor come in all shapes, sizes, and skillsets.
Take a look at some wing guys who are probably not getting enough attention.
Jamon Reed Jamon Reed 6'5" | SF Huffman | 2021 State AL , 6’5 SF, Huffman: A strong physical wing player that is arguably one of the best defenders in the state. His ability to anticipate an offensive player’s move before they make it and place himself in a position to make or end a play is very high level. His size allows him to be able to post up and muscle smaller defenders and beat bigger slower defenders off the dribble and finish at the cup. He is a heady defender who always seems to be in a position to sacrifice his body and take charges for his team.
Trevon Ragland Trevon Ragland 6'3" | SF Sparkman | 2021 State AL , 6’3 WF, Sparkman: A scoring wing player who has good lift and athletic ability. He shoots it well from the outside but really gets busy in that 15-17 ft range. He runs the floor well and has good hands. His ball-handling and one-on-one moves have improved and should only get better with continuous work. He is a good shot blocker for his position and has the potential to be a high-level rebounder from the wing position because of that very good jumping ability. Anxious to see what level he is able to take his game.
Brad Lewis Brad Lewis 6'4" | SF Thompson | 2021 State AL , 6’4 SF, Thompson: A high flying slasher who could easily slide over and play that second guard role. The lefty has tremendous ups with the ability to finish over or through defenders. He has quick hands on the defensive end and is just relentless at attacking the basket. He has a unique ability to slither through traffic get to the painted area and get back to his left hand. He is a highlight ready to happen whether in the open court or on backdoor alley-oops. He can also step out and shoot the ball and break defenders down off the dribble from the top. He is the basketball equivalent to a swiss army knife.
Le’Tarion White Le’Tarion White 6'4" | SF Jeff Davis | 2021 State AL , 6’5 SF, Jeff Davis: A long athletic wing player that can play the wing or that stretch 4 position. His main strength is his ability to rebound the basketball on both ends of the floor. It is true value in a player that can consistently get extra positions for a team multiple times a game. He has a knack of just knowing where the ball is and going after it. He has ideal size to guard the 1-4 positions at a very high level. His offensive game is polished to where he knows where his strengths are. He does have good ball-handling ability that in the right situations can beat guys off the dribble and score at the basket.
JaDamian Givan JaDamian Givan 6'5" | SF Sidney Lanier | 2021 State AL , 6’5 SF, Sidney Lanier: A shooting big that can also play both the wing and stretch 4 position. He is deadly in the pick and pop game with his ability to stretch the floor from well beyond the 3 point line. He is a matchup nightmare for teams that try and guard him with a big who is not comfortable on the perimeter. He is a good rebounder when engaged, but is ideal for schools looking to add a stretch wing guy that can really shoot the ball from behind the arc. He also has good athletic ability and is able to use his dribble to get to spots and get off that jumper that falls much more often than not.
Bryan Bennett Bryan Bennett 6'5" | SF Demopolis | 2021 State AL , 6’4 SF, Demopolis: This guy is like a pogo stick the way he elevates off the floor. He is a high energy guy who also possesses a lot of skill. He has very good elevation on his jump shot which allows him to get it off in the face of tight defense. The most promising aspect of his game is how he runs the floor. He gets out in transition and has the hands to catch, make a move, and finish usually above the rim. On the defensive end of the floor, he is a serious shot blocker. His speed in the open court makes him a threat at all times to chase down defenders and emphatically erase fast break attempts. A very good weakside defender that not only plays the passing lanes well but cleans up for mistakes of his teammates by being able to challenge shots at the rim.
