For the class of 2021, this upcoming year is huge. Not only is it their final year of high school basketball, but it’s also one more shot at showcasing their game for college coaches.
Here’s a few players I’ve been able to watch this year who could take a big step forward as a senior.
1. Zach Mellon Zach Mellon 6'3" | PF Brentwood | 2021 State CA-S – Brentwood
When I first saw Mellon play, what stood out the most was his role as a utility player. That is, someone who does all the dirty work and makes plays that won’t always show up in a box score. He’s a solid rebounder who gets good position on the glass. Decent defender in the paint when contesting shots. Patient in the post offensively. Has a nice looking hook shot.
2. Christian “Bam” Johnson – Lynwood
Johnson is a solid scorer who can get into the lane and can attack the rim relentlessly. He transferred to Lynwood from View Park this past season and he fit in well. He can create his own shot on the perimeter and he can shoot from three. He’s a combo guard, he can play the point as well. Draws defensive pressure and can open up the floor for the rest of the team.
3. William Lawson – Crenshaw
Lawson has the ability to be a real post threat his senior year. He already is on his way, he just needs a little more patience and coordination in the post. He can establish his position in the paint pretty decently. He’s got some traditional post moves as well as a little turnaround jumper he’s worked on. Big body in the paint on defense and on the glass.
4. Zachary Bronson – Hamilton
Bronson is an overall smart player and a strong and steady point guard. He may be a little bit small, but don’t let that fool you. He’s a crafty player and can finish well at the rim over bigger defenders. He runs the break well as the team’s ball-handler and he can create easy scoring opportunities for his teammates. He’s a pretty solid shooter from three-point range. Overall good vision and awareness.
5. Bernard Perry – Venice
When I saw Perry play, it was in a lopsided game in which Venice was soundly beaten. But Perry managed to stand out. He looked like a strong wing who can create his own offense on the perimeter. Can put the ball on the floor and make plays. Uses his strength at the rim to bump off smaller guards and finish. He can draw contact and get himself to the free-throw line. Active on the glass.
