Following a huge July on the travel circuit and a monster junior season, Podziemski had generated quite the buzz for himself on the recruiting trail.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the NCAA to extend the dead period through May 31, Podziemski and many other prospects in a similar position, find themselves playing the waiting game, eager for a chance to prove to college coaches that they’re worthy of a scholarship at the highest level.
“All I can do is get better every day at home and control what I can control,” Podziemski told Prep Hoops Wisconsin. “As far as the offers go, yeah it does suck, but I think when this quarantine is over you’ll see a whole improved version of me and my game. I think once the coaches see my game in July hopefully, they’ll know I’m a great fit for them and the offers will naturally come.”
Fortunately for Podziemski, he does have a Division 1 offer already in hand. In October, DePaul came forward and pulled the trigger on the 6-foot-5 sharpshooter.
“It was amazing,” he said. “I was on vacation with my family and they called me and told me. It was a feeling like none other.
“What sticks out most is their hard nose play. They aren’t a big school like Kentucky or Duke with a lot of high major talent, but they find other ways to get it done which impresses me the most.”
Podziemski has a long list of schools expressing interest at this time. He named Stanford, California, TCU, Butler, Miami (OH), Princeton, Valparaiso, UW-Milwaukee, and Wofford
“They are all serious I would say,” Podziemski stated. “I just haven’t played the best competition yet, so I think that’s what they’re waiting to see. Like I said, I feel I will show them what they wanna see.”
Iowa and Michigan had both contacted Podziemski at different stages in his recruitment as well.
As a junior, Podziemski averaged 27.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game, leading Saint John’s Northwestern Military Academy to a 19-6 overall record and a Midwest Classic Conference title.
When picking a school and a basketball program, Podziemski cited a fit on and off the floor, education, and the potential to play early.
“Most importantly somewhere that fits me and my family,” he said. “Secondly, the major I want to pursue. Lastly, somewhere I can come in and impact their program right away with a family atmosphere in the locker room.”
Podziemski will play with Phenom University during the travel season.
