Continue ReadingThe first round of the OSAA 6A post-season took place on Wednesday night and while many games were competitive, for the most part the bracket was “chalk”. In every game except for one (Oregon City’s win at North Medford), the higher seed won on their home floor. Will this be the case in round two on Saturday night? Here’s our predictions for those games, finishing with the “C” and “D” quadrants.
#14 Sherwood at #3 Jefferson
Sherwood played in what might have been the best game on Wednesday night as they outlasted Greshman in overtime at home. Now head coach Rahim Tufts and his Bowmen get the gift of trying to knock off Jefferson in their own gym. Jefferson got a bit of a scare but made their traditional run in the third quarter to stave off an upstart Sandy team and they know they’ll expect a similar effort out of Sherwood. Look for Jamison Guerra Jamison Guerra 5'11" | CG Sherwood | 2020 State OR and company to give it a good shot especially with their dangerous three-point shooting but in the end, Jefferson’s advantages size and athleticism should prevail.
Jed Prediction: Jefferson
Sherwood survived a first round scare against an underrated Gresham team. But playing at Jeff’s House will be too much for them, in addition the talent with Democrats have will stifle them all night.
Albert Prediction: Jefferson
Jamison Guerra Jamison Guerra 5'11" | CG Sherwood | 2020 State OR and the Pacific Conference champions will keep it close throughout, but Jefferson’s athleticism will eventually outlast the Bowmen.
Jackson Prediction: Jefferson
#11 Westview at #6 Barlow
This could be the best matchup of the second round as it features two teams that are playing some of their best basketball of the year. Barlow of course comes in on a 14-game winning streak and senior guard Jesse White Jesse White 6'0" | CG Sam Barlow | 2020 State OR is playing at a state player-of-the-year level, essentially getting buckets whenever he wants to. Westview is on a run of its own with five in a row including a ’W’ over #1 seed Jesuit. What gives in this matchup? The Wildcats won’t be afraid to run with the Bruins to some degree, but at the same time won’t want it to be a shootout. Barlow head coach Tom Johnson should be able to adjust and behind White and fellow senior Evan Inglesby Evan Inglesby 6'3" | SG Barlow | 2020 State OR , we see the Bruins eeking out a tight one at home.
Jed Prediction: Barlow
Westview celebrates a commanding victory over Grants Pass. Their reward is playing the best two man punch in the State in that of Jesse White Jesse White 6'0" | CG Sam Barlow | 2020 State OR and Evan Inglesby Evan Inglesby 6'3" | SG Barlow | 2020 State OR . Tough draw for Westview.
Albert Prediction: Barlow
In what will be an incredibly even game all night, Barlow’s home crowd should make a huge difference down the stretch. Expect Jesse White Jesse White 6'0" | CG Sam Barlow | 2020 State OR or Evan Inglesby Evan Inglesby 6'3" | SG Barlow | 2020 State OR to knock down a big shot late.
Jackson Prediction: Barlow
#10 South Eugene at #7 Lake Oswego
Lake Oswego hangs its hat on its defense and that certainly was the case with their 44-28 win over Cleveland in the first round. South Eugene has a similar mindset and will definitely be willing to grind with the Lakers. The difference here may be in that Lake Oswego head coach Marshall Cho has seen his squad will its way to more wins, especially as of late as the Lakers have pulled off 11 consecutive victories. South Eugene head coach Dave Hancock has a talented team but in the end the game is at Lake Oswego and Laker Nation out in full force will provide the environment to put LO over the edge for the win.
Jed Prediction: Lake Oswego
South will be forced to travel up the I-5 to play Lake Oswego, which is a tall task at this point in the season. Lake Oswego is battle tested, hungry, and determined thanks to the coaching calculations Marshall Cho has made all season.
Albert Prediction: Lake Oswego
In a battle of conference champions, the Axe will ride the backs of their four senior starters to a shocking second round upset.
Jackson Prediction: South Eugene
#18 Oregon City at #2 South Salem
As noted, Oregon City was the only team in the entire field to outperform their seed a win on the road, down at North Medford. South Salem pretty much cruised its way at home to their 15th win in a row. One thing that’s for sure in this one – it won’t be a cake walk. The Pioneers are peaking at the right time and their more methodical, physical style will certainly slow down the Saxons. While head coach Travis Brown won’t be able to empty his bench as he’s done often as of late, South Salem does seem to have the edge in overall size and athleticism to grind this one out.
Jed Prediction: South Salem
The Pioneers managed to pull it off on the road against North Medford. Now they bump into a very gritty, juggernaut of a team in South Salem. The Saxons are confident, physical, and team oriented.
Albert Prediction: South Salem
The Saxons will start slow but find their rhythm in the second half, outscoring the Pioneers significantly behind the shooting of Trey Galbraith Trey Galbraith 5'9" | PG South Salem | 2020 State OR .
Jackson Prediction: South Salem
