Continue ReadingPrinceton hosted a pair of games Wednesday night where the winners would advance and clash in a Friday night game. Hughes was a heavy favorite in their matchup, and they took care of business with a disciplined offense and swarming defense. Hughes had an impressively low 6 turnovers last night and 7 team fouls. Fenwick and Ross was a much different game. The atmosphere in the arena was about as loud as it can get, which is to no surprise with how these team’s fans travel. It was a battle of the bigs. AJ Braun and Max Stepaniak matched up well and gave their teams quality minutes. Down the stretch, AJ and Fenwick won the battle and will advance to play Hughes this Friday.
Hughes 61 Clinton Massie 28 (Standouts)
CamRon McKenzie – 2021, 6’2″ G (20pts, 8reb)
Camron is an elite shooter. Hughes couldn’t have asked for a better start from their leading scorer. He started off the game with the first 12 points for his side, and it didn’t look like he was going to miss at all last night. A small window of space is enough for him to pull up and get a good shot. He is going to be a key player against Fenwick as they don’t necessarily have someone that can shut him down.
Kionte Thomas – 2020, 6’1″ G (16pts, 7ast, 5stl, 6reb)
Camron started off on fire, but he soon handed off the torch to Kionte. Kionte was an all around baller Wednesday. He was making good passing decisions, quick in transition, aggressive at the rim, and bouncy on his dunks that got him going offensively. Defensively he has great side-side movement and is very quick on his feet.
Jaesean Martin – 2022, 5’9″ G (15pts)
Jaesean is a solid shooter and ball handler. He often is able to find himself open in the corners to hit shots. He is also quick in transition and finished his opportunies. As his game matures, I expect he will be a top guard in his class in Cincinnati.
Bishop Fenwick 51 Hamilton Ross 39 (Standouts)
AJ Braun – 2021, 6’9″ F (12pts, 5blks)
AJ started off the game with two huge blocks to let Ross know nothing was coming easy inside. Offensively, he was quiet in the first half. Most of Fenwick scorers were around 5-6 points. However, in the second half AJ took over the paint once again offensively and defensively. There was a string of possessions where he was able to use his big fram to back down Ross and finish at the rim, and then he would proceed to make a big defensive play at the other end.
Will Richards – 2021, 6’2″ F (Game-high 15 pts)
Will was reliable for the Falcons. He isn’t a flashy player, but he works at each aspect of the game while he is on the floor. His movement off the ball created some easy cances for him, but he was also there for the gritty chances as well. His efficiency is going to be key moving forward. It will be interesting to see if he gets the matchup vs CamRon McKenzie this Friday.
Max Stepaniak – 2021, 6’7″ F (Team-high 13pts) – Ross
Max was a key part in keeping the game close. He is an athletic big who was able to pop out and hit a deep shot. Then, the next possession he was attacking at the rim. Defensively, he held Fenwick’s leading scorer to 12pts, all of which were earned by AJ with his strength and toughness. Max gave nothing up easy. Max has another year to mature, and with building some more strength, improving his handling, and improving his medium-long range game, he will become a soild prospect in the summer with AAU.
