Huskies’ coach and longtime SoCal high school hoops figurehead Harvey Kitani, as he always does, put together a strong field and exciting match-ups throughout the eight-game schedule. Below are some of the players who raised their stock.
Thomas Oosterbroek, Brentwood
The 6-foot-7 forward has been putting up consistent numbers during his junior season and Saturday was no different as his game-high 20 points paced Brentwood to a 65-63 win over El Camino Real. Oosterbroek has a strong, well-built frame and uses that to his advantage when absorbing and finishing through contact around the basket. The junior can also operate on the perimeter with ball skills and a smooth pull-up jumper in his arsenal.
Anthony Robinson, Long Beach Poly
Robinson is a menace on the defensive end. Whether it’s on the ball or in the passing lanes, the 5-foot-10 point guard has lightning quick hands and good anticipation which allow him to pick-pocket his cover for steals which lead to downhill transition opportunities for his team. Offensively, Robinson is best in on the break where he can use his speed to blow-by defenders and craftiness to finish around the basket.
Kenny Manzi, Rolling Hills Prep
Manzi is a just a freshman and has worked his way into the RHP starting lineup. The wiry 6-foot-5 freshman makes his mark as a high energy guy on both ends of the floor. Manzi is a bouncy athlete for his class and crashes the offensive and defensive boards with purpose. He has a long way to go from an offensive skill-set standpoint, but he does a lot of intangible things that most freshmen don’t realize are necessary.
Daniel Jackson, Santa Monica
Jackson is probably the biggest stock raiser to emerge on the day. The 6-foot-3 sophomore has a smooth perimeter shooting stroke and ability to create shots for himself and his teammates off the bounce. Jackson’s passing and vision were two of the things that stood out the most as he found cutters and hit shooters with accurate and timely dishes. He led the Vikings with 14 points in an upset win over Harvard-Westlake
Alex Nokes, Santa Monica
Nokes is another talented SaMo sophomore, and at 6-feet-7 with consistent perimeter shooting ability, he has intriguing upside. Nokes has a strong frame, is a mobile athlete, and showed the ability to stroke the 15-17 foot face-up shot with ease. With his size and body type, it will be interesting to see if he continues to develop that inside-out skill-set.
