Gilman was coming off of an inspiring last second win over Boys’ Latin and looking to make a statement with a win over the surging Gaels. At halftime the game had the makings for yet another great finish as Mount St. Joe led 28-27, but in the third quarter, they switched to a zone defense and Gilman went cold from the field. The Gaels ended up building a nine-point lead and never looked back as they came out on top by a final score of 66-55. Despite the loss, Gilman had four players score double-figures while the Gaels had three.
Let’s take a look at five intriguing prospects from this match up.
Ausar Crawley | 5’8 | Mount St. Joe ’21
Crawley is an extremely important piece for the Gaels. The 5-foot-8 point guard is an experienced floor general and knows how to control a game with pace and decision-making. Last night he scored 15 points and not one of his shot attempts were forced. Crawley allows the offense to come to him. His first intention as a point guard is to create for others and he did last night both in the half court with quick swing passes, operating in pick-and-rolls and finding guys in transition. Early in the season, Crawley got off to a rough start as he transitioned from football to basketball, but now seems to be finding his groove and picking his spots effectively.
Jalen Marshall | 5’11 | Gilman ’22
Marshall was a consistent scoring presence for the Hounds throughout this game. The 5-foot-11 guard made his impact by attacking the basket and refusing to be denied. He surprised me with his explosive athleticism and ability to handle contact from opposing bigs while in the air. He showed impressive coordination and soft touch on his way to 16 points, 14 of which came from getting downhill and attacking. Marshall is a big-time competitor on both ends and seems to be becoming more confident with his overall play.
Sean Carr | 6’5 | Mount St. Joseph ’21
Carr acts as the blue-collar big for the Gaels. When he isn’t finishing inside off penetrating guard’s dump off passes, Carr is always looking to feast on the offensive glass. He’s shown more versatility as a defender this season and can guard quicker wings for stints throughout games. He finished last night with 12 points and at least a half dozen rebounds.
Roman Hinds | 6’9 | Gilman ’20
Hinds and Marshall both led Gilman with 16 points and both were extremely efficient with their shots. At 6-foot-9, Hinds used his height to his advantage on the offensive glass and was rewarded with a few of his buckets off said situations. When MSJ switched to a zone defense, Hinds did a nice job sneaking around the dunker’s spot on both sides of the baseline and the Gilman guards were able to locate him for quick, easy looks. He was also a presence defensively as the anchor of Gilman’s zone defense. He communicated well and established position early on block outs to secure rebounds.
Christian Winborne | 6’1 | Gilman ’22
Winborne continues to be the initiator offensively as a sophomore and he seems to be taking steady progressions. He finished with 10 points in last night’s contest, but all of his makes from the field were impressive. Not in the sense of he wowed the crowd, but just solid basketball moves that you see done by players who truly understand the game. Winborne is good at faking hand-offs off the dribble and attacking the rim. There was also an instance where Winborne caught the ball on the wing, used a pump fake to get his man to jump and proceeded by taking two dribbled to the elbow before rising up and hitting a jumper over a defender who rotated from the help side.
