Quick note:
These teams are part of the Canyon Athletic Association. Some former D1 studs in this league like Brock Gardner, Nigel Shadd and recently Shon Robinson.
Here were 10 that impressed from the 4 teams:
2020
Marvin Pitts PF 6’7 1/2 Maya
-Pitts is an uber athletic post player with a strong build/frame who dunks the ball effortlessly. He seems to explode up off the ground. He can shoot it from elbow and in and works mostly in the paint. He rebounds and blocks shots at a good rate and moves his feet well on defense. He is easily one of the sleepers in the state. His athleticism is shocking how easy he just goes up.
Unisa “Yu Yu” Turay 5’10 PG AZ Compass Prep HS
-A jet quick scoring guard. He is one of the faster guards in the senior class. He can make the 3pt shot but loves to get into the lane. He has a nice floater and makes tough contested shots. He is quick on the ball defensively and although he is undersized, he is strong, tough with big time speed.
Jaylin McBryde W 6’2 AZ Compass Prep HS
-A super quick twitched athletic wing is a stud on the break. A new face for myself and he impressed. He is very good on defense. He seems to be a step ahead of the competition. He had 3 steals and a shocking 5 blocks for someone who is only 6’2 that’s impressive. He is an above the rim dunker and is a good rebounder. He is a decent perimeter shooter but could make strides. He gets most of his points in transition and slashing.
Turay and McByde were a tough duo to handle.Kahan Shoulders PG 5’10 San Tan Charter
-A confident pure PG controls games with his pace and handle. He is a ball hawk defensively collecting steals in bunches. He can get into the lane to score it and shoot it from the perimeter. He is another talented under sized guard that is tough. He isn’t as strong as Turay but more of a pure PG and trying to set the tone and make plays for others.
Shoulders is very calm under pressure.Elias Vargas SG 6’2 San Tan Charter
-A long and lean skilled wing. He can shoot the 3 off the catch plus drive to the cup. Despite being thin he isn’t afraid to mix it up inside the paint. He is a smart player and strategically only attempt good shots.
2021
Jose Miguel SF 6’4 Sequoia Pathway
-A skilled wing with a great feel for the game. He is a very good passer and made some passes I didn’t know he could do. He is best as a catch shooter from the 3pt line but can also get into the lane and use the floater and finish in traffic. He has good length to collect steals and rebounds the ball well.
Miguel can do many things to help a team win.Tavares Broady SF 6’5 Sequoia Pathway
-A thick downhill type of player with a nice build. He loves attacking the basket and can finish with either hand. He is a capable 3pt shooter but needs more reps moving forward. He handles the ball well and creates his own shot. Has to work on shot selection but has nice talent.
Omarion Goodwin SG 5’10 Maya
-Super athletic and fast scoring guard. He can hit from the 3pt line with good range and puts up points in a blink of an eye. Well built/good frame and quick with the ball in his hands. He is strong getting to the basket with his tight handle and although undersized, he finishes well through contact. He transferred in from West Phoenix where he put up some gaudy numbers. He is avg near 20 ppg at Maya.
Demetrus Johnson II PG 5’10 San Tan Charter
-A slick ball handler and a very good passer. He is a good shooter from deep and can get into the paint with a nice handle. He has a knack for getting to the FT line. He smartly gets contact and will score it or get fouled. He is a good FT shooter and one of the state’s leaders in assists at almost 7 per game. The stronger he gets moving forward will help him greatly. The talent is clearly there.
2022
Nathaniel Knight PF 6’5 AZ Compass Prep HS
-A long and athletic forward has some talent. He is inconsistent currently but blocks shots with his great length, grabs rebounds and can score it near the hoop. He is only 15 years old and will only get taller, stronger and improve. He is definitely one to keep an eye on.
