Last year, Ranney became the first Shore Conference school to win the Tournament of Champions, while Freehold Township, Wall and Manasquan all won sectional titles. The Shore Conference may not have a McDonald’s All-American, but it is full of talented players. Point guard is one of the better positions in the Shore Conference as there are a lot of quality lead guards. Here are the top point guards in the Shore Conference this season.
Jakari Spence, 5’10 Toms River North 2020
Spence is the engine that drives the Mariners’ offense. He is a blur in the open floor and knows how to get into the lane. Spence is not just a driver as he is capable of torching the nets from behind the arc . He is also a pest on the defensive side of the floor as he is able to clamp down opposing ball-handlers. Spence is looking to continue Toms River North’s dominance over A South this season and should be one of the top point guards in Group 4 as a senior.
Pete Gorman, 5’10 Mater Dei 2020
The Seraphs may have only won 13 games last season, but they have one of the Shore Conference’s most underrated players. Gorman may only be 5’10, but he knows how to finish around the basket. He had five 20-point games as a junior, including a career-high 25 points against Notre Dame High School. He is an underrated passer, but his scoring is what Mater Dei needs. Gorman has the potential to eclipse 15 points a game as a senior as Mater Dei looks to contend in B Central.
Sam Fagan, 5’10 Neptune 2021
Fagan may have had his sophomore season cut short due to injury, but he is still a legitimate DI prospect. He has good court vision, solid handles and a knack for finding the open man. Fagan is a marksman from behind the arc, but can also beat teams with his solid mid-range game. His on-ball defense can be improved, which should improve by the end of the year because of his high basketball IQ. Neptune is looking to make a deep run in Central Jersey Group 3 and Fagan will be the X-Factor for the Fliers.
Elijah Perkins, 6’3 Ranney 2022
Perkins could be considered more of a combo guard, but he deserves a spot on this list. The sophomore guard is the only main contributor who returns from last year’s Tournament of Champions squad. Perkins is explosive off the bounce as he can consistently get to the rim. He has solid handles and understands how to draw contact once he gets in the lane. Ranney should have another good year in the Shore Conference, but the Panthers need Perkins’ scoring to make a deep run in Non-Public B South.
Ben Roy, 6’0 Manasquan 2022
Roy was a key figure for last season’s Central Jersey Group 2 champs as he was the team’s primary ball-handler. The sophomore guard has a good feel for the game as he understands how to put his teammates in the best position to score. Roy is a solid three-pointer shooter as he knocked down 35 three-pointers as a freshman. He is also a solid on-ball defender and can attack the basket at will. Manasquan fell short of taking home the Shore Conference title last season, but Roy will be looking to change that in 2019-20.
