The pace picked up in the second quarter as Fort Gibson ramped up its pressure in an attempt to force turnovers. Fort Gibson thrived in the faster pace game as they took back the lead 32-31 over Fort Gibson. The third quarter was more of the same for Fort Gibson as they took their lead and extended it to 48-38. The fourth quarter seemed to be a free throw shooting contest and the Tigers thrived in that as they went 20-24 from the line in the fourth quarter alone. The Tigers took the game 76 to 59.
Takeaways
Pace Dictated the Game
The pace of the game was the determining factor in this one. The faster the ball moved the more it was in favor in the Tigers. The more they worked their offense, the more it favored the Conquerors. In the first half you saw it go both ways. In the first quarter Victory had it their way but Fort Gibson turned up the pressure in the second and found it to be their way. The pace stayed Fort Gibson’s way in the second half as the Conquerors could not keep up with the speed of Fort Gibson.
Rebounding Advantage
Fort Gibson controlled the boards all night long. They had a height advantage of the Conquerors and the work ethic of the Tigers was shown in how they dominated in the paint. Fort Gibson got a bunch of second chance opportunities because of how they were on the boards. They boxed out well and played strong down low.
Players to Know
Jaxon Blunt 2022 Fort Gibson Guard
Blunt is a guard that can go unnoticed for long periods of the game. He is a streaky shooter who can get hot and torch another team if they give him too much space. Blunt runs the point for Fort Gibson and takes care of the ball. He has good fundamentals and gets them into their offense with ease. He has good vision and often time finds the open man with great passes. Blunt will have the opportunities to score a lot this season with other teams keying on Conner Calavan and leaving more space for him. Blunt took advantage of that space today as he was all over the court scoring at all three levels. Blunt finished the game with a game high 30 points.
Conner Calavan 2020 Fort Gibson Guard
Calavan did what Calavan does in this one. He was a pure scorer. He found so many different ways to get himself points as he got to the free throw line consistently throughout the game. He scored down low with muscles and athleticism. One thing that was different tonight was that Calavan could not find the space to get his regular shot off and that is when he created his offense. He would get the defenders hand in his space and take advantage of it. Calavan was fed the ball in the paint and he thrived taking advantage of a smaller opponent. Calavan finished the game with 21 points.
Luke Patton 2022 Victory Christian Post
Patton was the bright spot for Victory in this game. He was active in the paint and scored a majority of his points there. He even showed his ability to step out to the perimeter by knocking down a three in the second quarter. Patton finished the game with a team high 18 points.
